  • Bristol Domestic Abuse Forum definition
  • The misuse of physical emotional, sexual or
    financial control by one person over another who
    is or has been in a relationship. This includes
    family members.
  • Domestic abuse covers a wide range of
    behaviours and may be actual or threatened.
  • Domestic abuse is usually perpetrated by men
    against women, but not exclusively.
  • Domestic abuse occurs in all groups and
    sections of society and may be experienced
    differently due to and compounded by race,
    sexuality, disability, age, religion, culture,
    class or mental health.
  • (N.B. Children are always affected by
    or living with or witnessing DA)

  • One in four women experiences domestic violence
    in their lifetime. (British Crime
    Survey 2006/2007)
  • Two women are killed each week by a current or
    former partner (British Crime Survey
    2006/2007)
  • Violence against women is the biggest killer of
    women under 45 more than cancer, maleria, war
    and road traffic accidents. (WHO 2005)
  • Every year 500 recent victims of domestic
    violence commit suicide (Hard Knock Life, New
    Philanthropy Capital, April 2008)
  • In homes where children live, 90 of domestic
    abuse takes place when children are in the same
    or the next room. (DOH 2005)
  • The estimated total cost of domestic violence to
    society in monetary terms is 23 billion per
    annum in UK. (Walby, 2004)

  • The primary role of Childrens Centre staff is to
    promote the healthy development of young
    children. The effect of domestic abuse on
    children and families is profound. It always
    impacts on children

  • Health Visiting experience and Early Years
    Practitioners growing awareness of the impact of
    DA on Children identifying a need for staff
    awareness raising to enable early identification

    and intervention
