The Need for Planning
  • Thousands of school age children die each year
  • The loss of anyone in the school family can
devastate the school and the surrounding
    community
  • Now, more than ever, the school functions as the
    second home for children
  • The simple acts of listening, understanding and
being supportive can have immediate and long term
benefits for both children and adults

10
A schools goal in dealing with a death should be
to
  • Acknowledge the death honestly
  • Allow students and staff to express their
    feelings
  • Offer an outlet for students and staff who desire
    to help

in planning to meet the needs of students, staff,
    and school community

questions or may need help in conducting
    classroom discussions
  • Provide individual and small group support for
    staff and students
  • Provide parent support and information

    support/counseling
