1
Pygmalion Revisited
  • A GRASPS Examining Language and Class

2
Goal
  • Your goal is to develop a model/tool that will
assess the speaking skills and class of
    individuals in current culture.

3
Role
  • Your and your partner are devotees of the work of
Professor Henry Higgins and Colonel George
Pickering. Inspired by their transformation of
Eliza, you are seeking a subject to refine. You
are looking for the roughest material to work
    with.

4
Audience
  • Your audience for this project will be your
classmates and the project overseer, her majesty
    Mrs. Bradbury.

5
Situation
  • You and your partner are seeking a challenge.
Inspired by the transformation of Eliza, you are
seeking a subject to refine, and only the most
    desperate character will suffice.

6
Procedures
  • Brainstorm as many elements of refined speech as
    you can.
  • Choose the best ten and build a model (chart in
Word, Spreadsheet Rubric in Excel, Flow Chart,
etc) using these as your grading criteria.
  • Develop a scale (point values for each criterion
    and rankings for totals).
  • Beta Test your model using the passage uttered by
Mr. Doolittle on page 35 of your book.

7
Procedures
  • Discuss your findings with the large group.
  • Then test your model on at least 4 more subjects.
  • One must be from campus
  • Two may be celebrities or public figures or
    characters
  • Perform your tests in such a way that you can
actually listen to the potential candidate for a
duration of five minutes or more, but do not tell
them what you are up to.
  • Record your findings and bring them with you to
    class tomorrow.
  • Write a paragraph addressing the following The
strengths of your model, the winner, and
    rationale
