Hello. My name is Jonathan (Jon) Dekker. I am
in my ninth year of teaching in the Saginaw
Public School District. Ive been married to my
wife Denise, whom I met way back in 7th grade at
Jackson Park Junior High School in Wyoming,
Michigan, since 1987. We have two children,
Jordan, age 11 and Alyssa who just turned 7. We
also have a shih tzu named Rudy. I enlisted in
the United States Air Force in 1987 and was
stationed at Bolling AFB in Washington, D.C.
serving in the USAF Presidential Honor Guard. I
also was stationed in Florida at Patrick AFB,
which is just south of Cape Canaveral and Cocoa
Beach. I graduated with an associate degree from
Grand Rapids Junior College, earned a bachelor
degree from Calvin College and a master in
education degree from Aquinas College. I am
completing a master degree in educational
leadership from the University of Cincinnati at
the end of this month. I am thoroughly enjoying
teaching here at Zilwaukee and hope that I have
the opportunity to work and grow as a teacher for
many years to come. I love the staff members,
the kids, and all of the parents that Ive met.
I also enjoy sports and athletics as both an
observer and participant. I like golf,
basketball, football, and baseball.

Halloween Visit On Friday. October 26 th,
The pre-kindergarten classes went in Halloween
costume to Bickford Cottage, an assisted living
facility on Mackinaw near Tittabawassee. The
children showed off their costumes, sang two
songs and presented two stories. A grandmother
provided a wrapped carnation for each residents
and workers. The residents loved our visit and
were thrilled to see them in costume.

Day of the Dead
The 2nd graders from Mrs. Paetz's class learned
all about Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
during Halloween week. This Mexican holiday is a
two day celebration, beginning Nov. 1st, in
which families fondly remember loved ones who
have passed away. There are many traditions that
go along with this holiday, one being to make a
special bread called Pan de Muertos (Bread of the
Dead). The 2nd graders had the opportunity to
try this sweet bread and it got rave reviews.
The boys and girls in Mrs. Paetz's class learned
a lot of interesting facts about Dia de los
Muertos, just ask them!
Family Math Night  Nov. 13th from 6 p.m. to 7
p.m. prior to our P.T.C. meeting we are having a
fun get together for families. Bring your son or
daughter and play some math games. This event is
open to all grade levels K-8. Come have a great
time! Games included Diffy, Funny Bug, Metric
draw, Pocket Full of Coins, Shaping Up!,
Tangranimals (Chinese puzzle), Textiles, Walk the
Line, Cotton Ball Shot Putt, Fraction Cover-Up,
Mancala, Shisima (Kenya), Stick Game (Native
American), Target Countdown, Toma Todo (Mexico),
and Close the Lid.
MATH NEWS In our school quality plan we state
that Teachers will use multiple strategies to
assist students in achieving mastery of basic
math facts. PARENTSwe need your help! We are
encouraging 2nd and 3rd graders to focus on
addition facts, and then subtraction facts. For
4th and 5th graders we are focusing on
multiplication facts, then division facts. If
you could spend 3 minutes a day working on basic
math facts with your child, it would have a
significant impact. We are finding many middle
school students who are not able to add without
using their fingers. It is very difficult for
students to learn new information when they dont
have mastery of the facts. Their focus becomes
the facts, not the new information. Your child
will have to pass two years of algebra to
graduate from high school. Do them a favor help
them with their math facts. Thanks, Margaret
Wilson, Comp. Ed. Math Teacher

Career Quest Jason Laporte has been selected to
pilot the 20 hour on-line course along with Lori
Howlett from Central Middle School and Aaron
Ostrander from Zilwaukee. This 20 hour on-line
course has been developed to meet the new high
school requirements for an on-line course.
Career Quest will be replacing "Planning for
Success" that is taught during the fourth marking
period in all 8th grade classrooms. This is a six
week pilot that began Wednesday, November 7, 2007
and will continue until Friday, December 21,
2007. Students will need to have daily access to
computers so they can complete the research and
course work. Lori Howlett- Central - Computer
Lab Aaron Ostrander - Zilwaukee - wireless
carts Jason Laporte - South - ? - Media Center or
Computer Lab The teachers involved in the pilot
will be sharing curriculum questions and IT
concerns through an on-line blog in Moodle. It is
our hope that by doing a pilot, we will discover
the bumps in the road and have them corrected for
the roll-out with all of the other 8th grade
teachers in January. These teachers received
headsets for each of their students enrolled in
the pilot course today for use with the career
videos that are a part of the Career Quest
course. This is an exciting time as we move
towards developing technically proficient
students.
Bay City State Recreation Area The 2nd grade from
Mrs. Paetz's class and the 3rd graders from Mrs.
Decuf's class recently went on an educational
field trip to the Bay City State Park. The
students were able to participate in fun outdoor
exploration which helped them to learn about our
state's wetland resources. This field trip was
made possible through a 150 bus mini-grant
through the Friends of the Bay City State
Recreation Area. The Dow Corning Foundation
supplied the funding to make these mini-grants
possible. A big THANK YOU goes out to this local
foundation and the Friends of BCSRA for their
support of our students and the bus
transportation mini-grant program which sponsors
27 school bus trips to the park this school year!

  • MRSA
  • According to the Center for Disease Control,
Methicillin- Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus is a
type of staph. Infection that is resistant to
antibiotics. Approximately 1 of the population
has a MRSA infection. Although MRSA is heard
about most often in a hospital setting, it can be
found in anywhere in the community.
Factors that are associated with the spread of
MRSA include close skin-to skin contact,
openings in the skin such as cuts or abrasions,
contaminated items and surfaces, and poor
hygiene. MRSA presents as a skin infection that
looks like a pimple or boil and can be red,
swollen, painful, or have pus or drainage.
  • The best way to protect yourself from contracting
MRSA is to practice good hygiene.
  • Hand washing with soap or alcohol based
    sanitizer.
  • Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered by a
    bandage.
  • Avoid contact with other peoples wounds.
  • Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or
    razors.
