Do you remember the senior officers who trained
you ?
  • not interested in training, and unfriendly
  • not interested in training, and friendly
  • who gave little or no guidance,
  • .. and then shouted when things went wrong
  • who ignored you

6
Do you remember the senior officers who trained
you ?
  • .and those who took an interest

and gave encouragement and guidance, let you try
things out for yourself, congratulated you when
you got things right, and encouraged and advised
you on how to do better next time if things went
a bit wrong
NOTE THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART Sea training
would be much better if we could encourage all
senior staff to become better mentors.

Can you teach Mentoring?
Verdict from Julian Parker ..you had better go
and do a course on mentoring and then complete
the chapter

The City of London around the year 1350 AD was
full of rogues and swindlers who took peoples
money for poor services and shoddy products. The
City fathers decided to start craft guilds to
ensure that all craftsmen were properly trained
as apprentices and mentored as journeymen, and
that the services and goods were supplied only by
skilled craftsmen.
