Title: The students of EGL 102 section 007 would like to present the results of their research papers.

1
Welcome!
  • The students of EGL 102 section 007 would like to
present the results of their research papers.
  • Lets start with Defining the Problem

2
Defining the Problem
  • The problem is that Oakton has a transfer
program, but many students are unaware of this.
  • The guidance counselors are also very busy.
  • Therefore, students are left to their own devices.

3
Explaining the Goals
  • Our main goal is to design a Transfer Preparation
    Program for Oakton
  • We divided the class into 8 research teams (each
team had 3 students), so that we could learn the
    answers to the following questions

4
8 Research Questions
  • Do community colleges effectively prepare
    students for transferring?
  • Do special relationships between community
    colleges and universities ensure success?
  • What is the National Articulation Transfer
network? Are there inconsistencies in college
    transfer policies?
  • What are the social academic adjustment
experiences of various groups (at risk,
    minorities, ESL, etc)?
  • How does university tuition affect transfer
    students?
  • What kind of transfer programs do universities
    have?
  • What are some common transfer barriers?
  • What are the graduation and drop-out rates for
transfer students? Who tends to graduate? Who
    tends to drop-out?

13
Our proposed Transfer Preparation Program
  • We know that Oakton has many resources to help
    with the transfer process.
  • One of the problems is that counselors are
overtaxed and other resources are unknown to
    students.
  • Our thought is that Oaktons Transfer Program
    needs revitalization.
  • The Oakton Transfer Program needs to come out of
the shadows and into a bright and vital light.

14
Our proposed Transfer Preparation Program
  • First of all OCC must have a visible, viable, and
    measurable Transfer Preparation Program
  • The most important characteristics of this
program are building relationships and making
    connections.
  • The Transfer Center Office
  • Course Applicability System (Software Program)
  • Plenty of Counselors
  • Resources Offered
  • Networking Encouraged
  • Center of Activity

15
Our proposed Transfer Preparation Program
  • Counselors
  • Must be visible
  • Must be available
  • Must be knowledgeable
  • Must be discipline specific
  • One-to-One Long Term Relationship
  • Faculty may have to be recruited and trained
  • Resources
  • Workshops (1 hour specialized topic)
  • Seminars (2 hours specialized topic)
  • Guest Speakers (from various colleges)
  • Field Trips to stay in dorms at various colleges

16
Our proposed Transfer Preparation Program
  • Networking
  • Finding other students who are going to same
    university
  • Building support groups for students attending
    same university
  • Parties and Events to forge relationships
  • Newsletter
  • Video Series on Transfer Shock
  • Video Tours of Colleges

17
Our Assessment Tool
  • Immediate Assessment
  • After each workshop or seminar, we ask
participants to fill out an evaluation form
  • We ask participants to rate the workshop
  • We ask for comments
  • We ask for advice for future topics

18
Our Assessment Tool
  • Attendance goals are set each July
  • They can be set in order to make sure we are not
    losing money
  • We track attendance during the year
  • We determine whether or not to cut certain
    programs

19
Assessment Tool
  • Persistence Study
  • Track an experimental and control group
  • Experimental group takes special core of transfer
    programs
  • Control group does not take this core
  • Track and measure which group attains bachelor
    degree
