5
What is TDMoIP?
  • Protocol for extending circuits over IP, Ethernet
    or MPLS
  • TDMoIP (CE) supports TDM circuits via circuit
    emulation/pseudowires
  • TDMoIP (CV) optimizes bandwidth by compressing
voice, fax, modem and HDLC-based data/signaling
  • Both TDMoIP variants provide
  • Transparency to signaling protocols (CAS, PRI,
    SS7, Q.Sig)
  • Investment Protection migration to IP without
    compromising rich PBX features (evolutionary
    approach with no fork-lift upgrades)
  • Channel aggregation and multiplexing that
improves resiliency to packet loss and provides
up to 60 better bandwidth utilization compared
    with VoIP

6
TDMoIP (CV) Optimizes Bandwidth by Compressing
Voice
  • Statistically multiplexes voice, fax, VBD and
    HDLC-based data/signaling over IP, Ethernet,
    MPLS, or TDM networks
  • Compresses voice to below 4kbps / channel
  • Voice Activity Detection, Silence Suppression,
    Comfort Noise Generation
  • HDLC flag suppression
  • SS7 FISU suppression (removing of idle frames)
  • Implemented in RADs Vmux and Gmux product lines

12
161 Voice Compression
  • The Vmux product line achieves 161 compression
    by
  • Deploying standard compression algorithms G.711,
    G.729A and G.723.1 (5.3 6.4 Kbps)
  • Aggregating multiple channels into a single
    TDMoIP frame
  • Frame size and packetizing intervals are user
    configurable
  • TDMoIP multiplexing helps achieve up to 60
better bandwidth utilization compared with VoIP
    solutions
  • Voice/silence Activity Detection (VAD) that
conserves bandwidth by preventing packets from
being sent when silence is detected
  • Comfort Noise Generation (CNG) to give the
listener the feeling that the call is still
    connected

13
TDMoIP Uses Less Bandwidth Than VoIP in Voice
Trunking Applications
14
PAMS - Speech Quality Scores
Better than 32kbps ADPCM
  • Typical scores PCM 64kbps 4.5, ADPCM 32kbps
    4
  • G.723.1 at 6.4kbps scores 4.19/4.11

? High voice quality is maintained even at high
packet loss rates !
15
Signaling Timeslot type
  • Vmux-2100 and Vmux-110 support both CAS and CCS
  • Vmux-110 with Analog interface supports only CAS
  • Supported CAS Protocols DTMF, R2-MFC
  • Supported CCS protocols SS7, ISDN-PRI, QSIG,
    DPNSS
  • Each timeslot in the E1/T1 voice port can be
    configured to the
  • following types
  • N.C
  • Voice
  • HDLC
  • SS7
  • Transparent

16
Data Timeslot Type
  • Up to 12 non-voice timeslots may be configured
    for each
  • user E1/T1 port. These 12 may be Transparent,
    HDLC or
  • SS7 as follows
  • Up to 12 Transparent timeslots
  • Maximum 4 HDLC channels
  • Maximum 2 SS7 channels
  • Combination of Transparent, HDLC and SS7 channels
    (total 12 timeslots)

17
Automatic Backup between TDM and IP Links
  • The main module of the Vmux-2100 has one ETH and
    two TDM interfaces
  • One may be configured as the Primary link, the
other two as Secondary and Third links
  • Should the primary link fail, Vmux will reroute
traffic to the second backup (and if needed to
    the third)
  • The Vmux-2100 continues monitoring the primary
link, and restores traffic to it as soon as
    end-to-end link connectivity is restored
  • Uplink Backup mechanism is based on TDMoIP OAM
    connectivity messages

Teleperformance USA Case Study Saves Millions
of on E1s to Offshore Contact Centers
In the 11 years since it was founded,
Teleperformance USA has grown to become one of
the largest contact center outsourcers in the US
market.
  • Goals
  • To expand its offshore operations in Buenos Aires
    and Manila
  • Extend hundreds of voice circuits from US-based
PBX or Automatic Call Distributors (ACDs) to
    offshore contact centers
  • Minimize international E1 circuit expenses (gt
    10K/Month)
  • Improve reliability and voice compression ratio
    (beyond 71)
  • Simple migration strategy from E1 circuits to an
    MPLS-based core network

27
Teleperformance USA Case Study
  • Solution
  • RAD's Vmux delivers high voice quality with a
    161 compression ratio
  • Supports multiple failover and redundancy options
    for maximum uptime.
  • Includes TDM and IP uplinks for simple migration
from circuit-based to packet switched networks.
  • Benefits
  • Minimizes costs associated with expensive E1/T1
    leased lines between distant locations
  • 100 compatible with existing and functional
    PBX/ACD equipment
  • No need for fork-lift upgrades or business
    disruptions

RADs solution has proven to be highly reliable
and effective for our remote contact center
application. We were able to quickly turn up
hundreds of seats while keeping a tight lid on
international E1 costs. Kelly Howard, Director
of Telecommunications at Teleperformance USA.

Wellpoint/ClearChannel Case Study
Challenge To reroute 1,000 simultaneous voice
lines for its insurance agents in case the
terrestrial network becomes unavailable.
Solution RADs compact Vmux-2100 voice trunking
gateway, installed in a mobile vehicle, beams
voice via satellite to the insurance agents,
temporarily housed in protective bunkers. High
compression ratio minimizes required bandwidth.
We sampled a large variety of VoIP and voice
compression products and Vmux proved to be the
most manageable and efficient product, with the
lowest overhead and the best quality voice.
Clients cant believe the voice is traveling over
satellite. Its cleaner than their
landlines. Don Harms, CEO, Clear Channel
Satellite Services
