What is SAMS?

• A system designed to treat software as an asset
• It has two high level goals
• Allow for tracking of software licenses in which
  Sandia has an interest
• Enable reapplication of software licenses across
  the enterprise

Why SAMS?

• Budget, accountability, licensing compliance
• Inventory is key to management of software assets
• Management of software assets requires
• knowledge of annual maintenance or software
  assurance costs
• knowledge of the number of licenses you own and
  can apply
• knowledge of how the software assets are in use
  in the enterprise
• the ability to reapply these assets across the
  enterprise

SAMS Current State

• Currently able to register a software license and
  associate people and/or machines with that
  license
• Some of the information recorded includes
  purchase cost, maintenance cost, expiration
  dates, number of seats, license ownership,
  secondary use rights
• Accomplished using existing infrastructure
  configuration items in Sandias NetWork
  Information System (NWIS)
• People
• Machines
• Organizations
• Projects
• Vendors

SAMS Permissions

• One of the first questions is who will manage
  software
• Currently there are two permission levels
• CSU Personnel and System Administrators
• Can associate people/machines with software
  licenses
• SAMS Administrators
• Can add/edit/delete software, software versions,
  software licenses
• Can associate people/machines with software
  licenses
• The SAMS Administrators must create the software
  and license in SAMS before it can be associated
  with people and/or machines

SAMS in Use at Sandia

• SAMS is in use at Sandia for a variety of
  purposes
• to track the machines associated with MSDN
  licenses so that these machines are excluded from
  the annual count of machines subject to Microsoft
  licensing fees
• to track the people using a seat (or multiple
  seats) under a 500-seat Dreamweaver license
• to track the people using a seat under a
  SmartDraw 100-seat license, and recover the cost
  of the license from each person
• to track the software installed on Sandia owned
  machines at the Yucca Mountain Project (YMP)
