Title: Environmental Stewardship the American Water Way

1
Environmental Stewardship the American Water Way
  • Mark W. LeChevallier, Ph.D.
  • Director, Innovation Environmental Stewardship

2
Environmental Policy
  • Being a steward of the environment is a
fundamental part of what American Water does. We
recognize that our activities have an impact on
the environment and that we need to appropriately
    manage those impacts
  • We will comply with all relevant environmental
    laws, regulations, and standards.
  • We will sustain the environment through
    responsible business practices that promote
    environmental stewardship with a holistic
approach to the prevention of pollution.
  • Promote environmental stewardship in our business
offerings, and where our operations, activities,
or practices could impact the environment
  • Encourage our partners, suppliers, agents, and
    contractors to adopt similar standards
  • Discuss our environmental performance with our
    stakeholders.
  • We will be efficient in our use of natural
resources, including energy, in both our
    operations and during construction.
  • Work to achieve a high level of energy efficiency
and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
  • Minimize resource consumption and waste
production in capital projects and new
    construction
  • Partner with our communities to protect
    watersheds, develop sustainable water resources,
and promote water conservation and use efficiency
  • Promote recycling, reuse, or energy recovery of
    wastes.

3
Stream Clean-up, Protection

landholdings and where activities may have an
    impact

8
Establishing Native Shortgrass Prairies
Pre-Planting
Post-Planting
  • Benefits
  • Reduced Maintenance
  • Increase Biodiversity (attracts wildlife)
  • Fixes Carbon Dioxide
  • Aesthetically Pleasing

10
A Culture of Stewardship
  • Annual Report published electronically
  • Lighting audits through Grainger
  • Copier set to print double-sided
  • Recycled paper
  • Styrofoam and plastic cups replaced with
    cardboard
  • Use of real glasses and mugs encouraged
  • Green IT equipment (laptops and computers)
    purchased, old equipment recycled
  • Recycling
  • paper, cardboard, glass, plastic
  • Scrap Metal (ferrous and non-ferrous)
  • Fluorescent Bulbs (using the BulbEater)
  • Aerosol Cans
  • Batteries (rechargeable and dry cell)

11
Climate Leaders
  • A voluntary EPA partnership with U.S. companies
    to develop long-term, comprehensive climate
    change strategies
  • Inventory corporate GHG emissions
  • Establish reporting
  • Set corporate-wide GHG reduction goals
  • Measure and report GHG emissions to the EPA
  • American Water was accepted into the Climate
Leaders Partnership on January 19, 2006

Inventory of AWs 2008 Green House Gas Emissions
1. Emissions in metric tons CO2e includes CO2,
N2O and methane emissions 2. Natural gas, diesel,
and fuel oil 3. Fleet 4. Biogas leakage from
anaerobic digesters 5. Leakage of air
conditioning refrigerant
13
Solar Energy
  • The Canal Road 589.05 KiloWatt ground-mounted
    system includes 3,366 175 watt-DC single
crystalline solar panels and covers almost 3
acres of land in two arrays
  • Supplements approximately 17 of the peak usage
power by supplying 695,079 KiloWatt-hours of AC
    power.
  • Saves approximately 105,990 a year in reduced
    energy costs
  • Eliminates 493,835 pounds (224 metric tons) of
    CO2e per year
  • Augmented by a 109.12 KiloWatt system anchored to
the top of the Filtered Water Reservoir.
  • Consists of 352 310 watt-DC semi-crystalline
    solar panel
  • Supplements approximately 3.6 of the peak power
    usage
  • Supplies 123,262 KiloWatt-hours of AC power.
  • Saves approximately 14,250 a year in reduced
    energy costs
  • Equivalent to saving 66,709 gallons of gasoline,
preserving 4.1 acres of trees from deforestation,
saving 1,367 barrels of oil, or the amount of
carbon sequestered by planting 15,069 trees.

14
Water Conservation / Reuse
  • Maximize conservation efforts
  • Education Public Regulatory
  • Conservation tariff structures
  • Reduce Lost Water Leak detection
  • WaterSense
  • In Camden, NJ we are working with the St.
Josephs Carpenter Society to demonstrate water
    saving appliances and fixtures
  • Maximize reuse opportunities
  • Annually AW recycles nearly 2 billion gallons of
    water
  • On-going research on reuse water quality

Big Buba saved 11 million gallons/yr Northwest
Valley Regional Water Reclamation Facility
15
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED)
  • Geothermal Heating and Cooling (Using the Water
    Wells)
  • Pervious Pavement to reduce storm water run off
  • Native Grass Planting 15-16 of the 40 site
acres will be planted Summer 2009
  • 80 of the occupied space in the plant will have
    direct sunlight
  • New facility will be zero discharge, everything
will be brought back to the front of the plant,
including water off the sludge lagoons. Sanitary
wastes will be treated through an on-site septic
    system
  • Dark sky lighting will be used in the parking
areas to reduce fugitive light emissions from
    leaving site
  • Recycled materials were used in the new plant
    construction including recycled aggregate and
    steel
  • Construction Waste was recycled during the
    building process
  • Bicycle Parking and a dedicated parking spot for
    a hybrid vehicle
  • Water efficient fixtures
  • Variable Frequency Drive Motors to reduce
    electricity consumption
  • Tracking and recycle of construction debris
  • Low VOC Paint
