Title: EGYPTIANS

1
EGYPTIANS
  • By Willie C. Fortson Jr. James Heard

2
Life of the Egyptians
  • In the Egyptian family the father was responsible
for providing for his family. The mother stayed
home and raised the children. Small children and
other female relatives lived in a special part of
the house. Much of the children's time was spent
    in training for their adulthood.
  • The Egyptians wore very simple clothing. The
clothes were made of linen. Egyptians wore
sandals made from leather or reed. They decorated
this clothing by wearing elaborate costume
    jewelry.
  • Cosmetics were also an important part of the
Egyptian lifestyle. Creams and oil were used as
well as eye paint. Eye paint was usually green,
made from copper, or black, made from lead or
    soot.
  • Egyptians played with dolls, balls, tops, animal
toys, and board games which were similar to
checkers. One favorite pet was the cat. Cats were
liked because they killed rats and mice in the
    house.

3
The Great Sphinx Of Giza
  • The Sphinx at Giza was built by King Khafre.
  • It was made from limestone
  • It has been through droughts, floods, and sand
storms. It is still standing and guarding the
pyramids of King Khufu and Khafre.
  • The body is 240 feet long, almost as long as a
    football field.
  • The head is taller than a six-story building.

4
  • Every visitor to Egypt is intrigued by the large
number of ancient temples, mostly of mammoth
    proportions.
  • In serving the gods the priests were acting on
behalf of the king whose decisions implemented
the will of the gods on earth, and who was alone
entitled to immediate contact with them by means
    of religious offices.
  • The higher ranks were favored with special robes
such as the leopard-skins worn over the shoulders
    by the sem priests.

5
Hieroglyphics
  • Hieroglyphics are more then just a way of
writing, they are also pictures, and as such they
are meant to be esthetically pleasing.
  • There are three forms of writing that were used
to write the ancient Egyptian language.
  • Hieroglyphics- Greek way of writing
  • Hieratic- cursive way of writing
  • Demotic-

6
Egyptians sports
  • Many of today's sports were practiced by the
    Ancient Egyptians
  • Ancient Egyptian kings, princes and statesmen
were keen on attending sports competitions, which
they encouraged and provided with the necessary
    equipment.

7
Religion
  • Mummification was a ritual, so the priests who
participated were trained to perform the process
with both surgical and ritual precision.
  • The head priest that supervised the ritual wore a
terra-cotta mask in the form of Anubis.
  • Once the organs were removed they were placed in
canopic jars, which were carved out of alabaster
and inscribed with spells that would one day
enable the organs to rejoin the body when it was
    resurrected.

Egyptians art
  • One of the greatest aspects of Egyptian art is
all the statues, paintings and architectural
forms seem to fall into place as if they obeyed
one law. Basically, we call such a law, an
    artistic "style.
  • The Egyptian artisan was a master at
realistically portraying details. But he would
paint or sculpt only the details most essential
to recognize the subject. At its simplest,
Egyptian art could be described as picture
symbols, such as our walking man at a stop light
indicting it's okay to cross the street.

9
Egyptian Technology
  • Ancient Egyptian craft workers not only
skillfully designed and made the wonderful
buildings and objects to be seen in Egypt and its
extensive museum collections, but also created
the tools necessary for working stone, wood,
gold, silver, copper and bronze into those
    artifacts.

10
The Egyptian Government
  • The pharaoh was the supreme ruler of Ancient
    Egypt.
  • The people of Egypt considered the pharaoh to be
a half-man, half-god. The pharaoh owned all of
Egypt. He owned all animals, mines, people, and
    even the Nile River.
  • The citizens gave the pharaoh portions of their
    crops in taxes.
  • During times of severe draught the pharaoh would
give some of this grain to the hungry Egyptians.
