The Port of Milwaukee links water transportation
to truck and rail transportation.

IT TAKES 4-1/2 DAYS FOR A SHIP TO TRAVEL FROM
MONTREAL TO MILWAUKEE.

Ocean ships are limited to the size of the St.
Lawrence Seaway locks
  • maximum of 740 feet long
  • 78 feet wide (beam)
  • 263 foot draft, and
  • 116.5 feet above water

annually on transportation costs.
Keeping Milwaukees Economy strong

Each year the port ships over 3,000,000 tons of
Bulk cargos salt, coal, grain and cement -
Heres the Bulk of it Transportation
Distribution!

Morton Salt, North American Salt and Cargill Salt
are located at the Port
  • Using the Port of Milwaukee saves these salt
    companies 12 million in delivery costs
    each year.

Cement is used to build houses, driveways, roads
and sidewalks.

Grain Exports, including corn, wheat and
soybeans, are grown within 60-miles of Milwaukee

Grain sometimes gets shipped to Africa in 50
pound bags.

Coal arrives in these mammoth Lakers and
distributed inland by hopper barge.

Steel and Machinery
Steel, machinery and other large equipment are
very valuable and very heavy. A lot of workers
are needed to handle this cargo.

JOBS
  • Jones Island employs roughly 350 people.
  • An additional 2,000 jobs are associated with the
    Port, including truck drivers, tug boat
    operators, railroad workers, etc.

WIND POWER GENERATION
132 foot long Blades
The Port of Milwaukee has shipped modern
windmills to Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois.

Domestic moves within the Great Lakes.

Once the ships arrive at the Port, our cranes
have the capability of lifting 440,000 lbs.
Siberia
Local companies manufacture equipment to mine
natural resources
The Port exports mining equipment to the farthest
corners of the earth.

Steel worth 150 million is shipped through the
Port yearly.

moving containerized cargo by rail and truck

Trains carrying intermodal containers arrive
daily from Canada to Jones Island.

Winter gives the vessel owners a chance to do
maintenance so the vessels dont break down
during the shipping season.

  • Cleaning the river of debris
  • Attracting cruise ships

The largest cruise ship in the Lakes carry 450
passengers.

The Lake Express passenger/ auto ferry will start
its 7th year of service in 2010.
Passengers enjoy a 2-1/2 hour boat trip across
Lake Michigan. Kids ride free!
