Title: The Skeletal System Third Grade Science Class
1 The Skeletal System Third Grade Science Class
By Mrs. DeLaCruz
We will be learning and identifying
parts of the skeletal system.
We will understand how all the
parts function within the whole unit.
Indiana Academic Standard 3.6.1 and 3.6.2
3 What would happen if we did not have any bones
Our bodies would be just like a bean bag.
We could not walk.
Well look like a puddle of skin and organs.
4 Bones have two purposes
It provides the structure which enables you to stand tall.
It protects the main organs in our bodies.
Skull protects our brain
Rib cage protects our heart and lungs
Vertebrae protects the spinal cord
5 How many bones do we have
At birth we are born with over 300 bones
As we grow older the bones are
then fused together
Later in life
an adult has only 206 bones.
6 How do your bones move
With help from our muscles and joints.
Muscles are attached to bones. When muscles contract the bones act as levers that allows various body parts to move.
Joints provides a flexible connections between these bones.
Knees work like door hinges
Neck pivots so that you can turn your head
Shoulders enable you to move your arms 360 degrees
7 What are the function of the skeletal system
It provides shape and form for our bodies.
It supports and protect our vital organs.
It allows our body to move about.
It produces blood for the body.
It stores minerals.
8 Did you know
There are 27 bones in each hand.
The neck has 7 bones. A giraffe has 7 neck bones too but its bones are very long!
There are more than 20 small bones in the backbone or spine. Each bone has hole in it for the spinal cord.
The hip bone or pelvis has 6 bones joined together. Its shaped like a bowl.
The thigh bone is called a femur. It is the strongest heaviest and longest bone in the human body.
The leg bone is really 2 bones. The fibula is on the side and the tibia is in front.
There are more than 20 bones in each foot! The foot bones grow faster than any other bones in the body.
9 Class Assignment
We will make a model of a skeleton with
And a little imagination
10 In Summary What This Means
The Skeletal system serves many important functions. It provides the shape and form for our bodies. In addition the skeletal system allows bodily movement. The bones serve as a storage area for minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. Blood cells are produce by the marrow located in some bones.
