Title: What You Need to Know to Make a Difference

1
What You Need to Know to Make a Difference
  • Environmental Sustainability Business Club (ESBC)
  • Kellogg Greening Initiative (KGI)

2
  • Start becoming a responsible business leader now
make changes in your current lifestyle and
    incorporate sustainability into your future
    career.
  • Spread the word about going green.

Recycling at Kellogg

Recycling at Kellogg
  • Important clarification points
  • You can recycle fliers with tape or staples in
    them.
  • Liquids food in containers are not recommended,
but its ok to recycle them.
  • Look for the recycling on the bottom of
containers (indicated inside a triangle) 1-5
are recyclable i.e. stir-fry containers can be
    recycled
  • Bottle caps cannot be recycled
  • The bins in study rooms are for recycling papers
only . Note recycling bins for cans and plastic
    to be added soon
  • If trash, paper, and bottles/cans are in the same
container, this can prevent the whole bin from
being recycled since the items in the bin will
    not be resorted.
  • The boxes that sandwiches come in should be put
    in the paper bin
  • Forks knives cant be recycled, nor can straws.
  • Coffee sleeves are recyclable.
  • The fountain sodas cups are not recyclable.
  • Drink lids can be recycled in the plastic bins.

Recycling Electronics
  • WHERE to recycle on-campus and WHAT can be
    recycled?
  • http//www.northwestern.edu/uservices/office/compu
    ter/student.html
  • WHY should you recycle?
  • Recycling electronics helps reduce pollution that
would be generated while manufacturing a new
product and the need to extract valuable and
limited virgin resources. It also reduces the
energy used in new product manufacturing.
  • Donating used (but still operating) electronics
for reuse extends the lives of valuable products
and keeps them out of the waste stream for a
longer period of time. Reuse of electronic
products, in addition to being an environmentally
preferable alternative, also benefits society. By
donating your used electronics, you allow
    schools, nonprofit organizations, and
lower-income families to obtain equipment that
    they otherwise could not afford.

6
Recycling Batteries
  • Buy reusable batteries, but if you already have
regular batteries, recycle them after use.
  • Where can batteries be recycled?
  • Norris Center (just inside the main entrance,
there is a box on your right) or any of these
    locations http//www.rbrc.org/consumer/results.p
    hp?s_Dealer_Zip60201s_Dealer_Radius500
  • Why recycle?
  • Batteries contain toxic chemicals such as lead,
mercury and cadmium. These chemicals should not
be mixed with regular garbage, which is
incinerated. The release of these chemicals into
the air can have negative health effects for the
entire city. There is also the risk of these
chemicals entering the groundwater system by
leaching into the ground at landfills. From
there, they can enter the citys water supply.
Recycling batteries at specific battery recycling
sites such as libraries and Walgreens also
ensures that battery parts are reused.

Eco-Friendly Transportation Options
  • Campus Shuttles are free with WildCARD
  • www.shuttle.northwestern.edu
  • SafeRide is NUs safe and free alternative to
walking alone after dark. It uses a fleet of
Toyota Priuses, which are hybrid vehicles with
great fuel economy and much lower emissions than
    a standard car.

  • I-go Car is a non-profit car sharing organization
    committed to providing affordable transportation
options for students and faculty on university
campuses located in Chicago, Evanston and Oak
Park. You can reserve any car you like in
advance and drive it for as long as you reserve
    it.

Reducing your Carbon Imprint
  • How does it work?
  • Emissions released by car and airplane travel can
be addressed by purchasing carbon offsets through
a number of programs. Private individuals can
offset the environmental impact of emissions from
their air travel by purchasing a myclimate
ticket. By purchasing a myclimate ticket you can
offset the harmful effects of your flight on the
climate. The same level of emissions caused by
your flight can be reduced in a carbon offset
    project.
  • How can I do it?
  • In a study by Tufts University myclimate is
rated amongst four carbon offset providers
worldwide that are recommended without any
reservations. Kellogg has been using myclimate
for KWEST, GIM, and other travel needs

How to be Green at Home
  • Replace your light bulbs with compact fluorescent
bulbs (one CFL saves 150 lbs of carbon dioxide a
    year) or even cutting-edge LEDs.
  • Drive less. One pound of carbon dioxide is saved
    every mile you dont drive.
  • Check tires. Properly inflated tires can improve
gas mileage by more than 3.
  • Use less hot water. It takes a lot of energy to
    heat water.
  • Minimize water consumption by turning off water
when brushing teeth and shaving. Take shorter
showers instead of baths and only run full
    dishwashers and washing machines.
  • Bring your own bags to the grocery store
recycle plastic bags at the grocery store (Whole
Foods and Jewel Osco have places to do so)
  • Buy products with minimal packaging or in bulk.
You can save 1,200 lbs of CO2 if you reduce your
    garbage by 10

10
How to be Green at Home
  • Adjust the thermostat to the lowest (in winter)
or highest (in summer) comfortable temperature .
A 2 degree adjustment can save 2,000 lbs of
    CO2/year.
  • Fill the sink when doing dishes instead of
running the water. This uses 3 times less water.
  • Report leaks A leaking faucet can waste 1500
    gallons of water/year.
  • Dont flush toilets unnecessarily or use it as a
wastebasket each flush uses up to 5 gallons of
    water.
  • Most dry cleaning is toxic - call around for a
cleaning service that practices wet cleaning.
    Lake City Cleaners (http//www.lakecitycleaners.co
m/home.htm) in Evanston provides this service.
Just ask for Monarch Care (They mail coupons if
you get on their mailing list, and they provide
    wildcard discounts.)
  • Conserve electricity by turning off lights when
leaving rooms and turning off electronic devices
when not in use. Unplug devices when leaving for
    vacation.
  • Use eco-friendly detergents, hand soaps, and
    other cleaners.

11
Green Cleaning Products
  • Where / What to purchase
  • Method Cleaners and Seventh Generations green
all-purpose cleaners are sold at Whole Foods.
  • Cloroxs Green Works line of natural cleaning
products are sold at most major retail stores
(Walmart, Target, etc.) these cleaning products
are just as powerful as conventional ones.
  • Ecco Living, started by undergraduate
Northwestern students, sells various school and
    cleaning supplies. http//eccoliving.com/products
    .html
  • Earth Friendly Products, E Cover ,and Mrs Meyers
    are available at drugstore.com.
  • Other environmentally friendly cleaning products
  • Simple Green
  • Planet
  • Why should green cleaning products be used?
  • Green household cleaners are made with natural
ingredients that are recyclable or biodegradable.

12
Reduce Waste
  • Dont throw things away that can be recycled or
    donated
  • Think twice before printing out documents.
  • Proof documents on the computer instead of
    printing numerous drafts.
  • Use dual-sided copying and printing whenever
    possible.
  • Print presentation handouts with 6 slides per
    page.
  • Route or post general information such as memos.
  • Use e-mail.
  • Purchase long-lasting products and only what you
    need.
  • Reevaluate print quantities needed for reports
    and publications.
  • Enable the sleep mode on your computer and turn
the computer off when you arent using it.
    Screen savers use energy.

13
Reuse Supplies
  • Use a reusable mug instead of disposable water
    bottles, Styrofoam or paper cups.
  • Reuse file folders and corrugated boxes.
  • Use the back of printed paper or obsolete forms
    for scratch pads and drafts.
  • Consider buying second-hand items at resale shops
and sites like Freecycle (It's a grassroots and
entirely nonprofit movement of people who are
giving ( getting) stuff for free in their own
    towns) and Craigslist.

14
KGI Greening Successes
  • Technology Problems getting duplex printing to
work? Tired of carrying around twice the paper?
KIS and the Environmental Sustainability Business
Club have a fix. Either spend 5 minutes using KIS
walk-up support or check out the do-it-yourself
    fix on KISs website http//www.kellogg.northwes
    tern.edu/kis/laptop/troubleshoot/t60p.htm .
  • Travel Carbon Offsets GIM travel carbon offsets
are a hit! Students have a few more weeks to buy
carbon offsets for each tripcontact Blake
Durtsche or Shira Schwarz with questions.
  • DAK DAK is going green! Planning efforts will
reduce paper and food waste, in addition to
providing more recycling containers for large
    events.
  • Recycling A recycling bin audit was performed
during the Fall Quarter resulting in efforts to
fill recycling bin gaps and to create better
    signage/instructions.
  • Cups Styrofoam cups have been replaced by paper
cups. Students are encouraged to use reusable
cups and are offered free coffee from 8-10 am on
Monday, when using a reusable cup.
  • Food Ecolab green cleaning products are used by
food service operations . Half of the food is
locally grown or produced food. Cooking oil is
    recycled to make animal feed
  • Recycling containers will be placed in McManus
    later this quarter
