A. The Powder Keg of Europe
  • In 1914, Bosnia was a territory of the
    Austro-Hungarian Empire.
  • Many Bosnian Serbs wanted their independence.
  • One of these was a man named Gavrilo Princip.
  • Princip was a member of a terrorist organization.
  • His organization planned to make a statement.

B. Assassination in Sarajevo
  • Archduke Franz Ferdinand visited Sarajevo on June
    28, 1914.
  • The meeting was tense, the terrorists were in
    place.
  • As the Archduke drove away from City Hall,
    Princip struck.
  • The first shot hit the Archdukes pregnant wife,
    Sophie.
  • The next one hit the Archduke.
  • Both died later from their wounds.

C. The Road to War
  • The Austrian Government was furious.
  • In response they delivered an ultimatum.
  • The Austrian government demanded the following

  • Suppress anti-Austrian publications.
  • Dissolve all Serbian Nationalist organizations.
  • Stop teaching Serbian Nationalism in all schools.
  • Eliminate anti-Austrian officers from the
    military.
  • Allow Austria to suppress Serbian Nationalism.

  • Investigate the assassination.
  • Arrest two suspects identified by Austria.
  • Stop arms transfers from Serbia.
  • Explain anti-Austrian statements by Serbian
    officials.
  • Notify Austria when Serbia has complied.

  • Serbia agreed to only one condition.
  • After the Serbian response, Austria declares war.
