Program Beginnings
  • The INFO-NET Story
  • In 1991, rural school districts in the service
area covered by Central Texas Telephone
Cooperative, Inc. were approached by the
telephone company to see if they would become a
partner with the cooperative in bringing in new
    technologies to the school districts.

11
  • The INFO-NET Story
  • Eight, small, rural poor school districts
encompassing 3,000 square miles in Central Texas
joined CTTC. The participating school districts
    included Brady, Cherokee, Goldthwaite, Lohn,
Mullin, Priddy, Rochelle, and Star. Although
connectivity was not provided at this time San
Saba, Richland Springs, Lometa and Evant joined
    the consortium for future expansion.

12
  • The INFO NET Story
  • The equipment was installed in a classroom in
each of the school districts in 1995.
  • The interactive distance learning classes allow
    for
  • the schools to share their teaching resources
  • allow for school board members to receive
    training over the network
  • allow for students to take advanced classes from
    teachers at other schools
  • allow for students to take drivers education
    classes
  • allow for college courses from Central Texas
College and high school courses through the local
    education agency

13
  • The INFO-NET Story
  • Central Texas College has been working with
INFO-NET since 1993 in utilizing distance
learning networks in the classrooms. At the time,
the rural school districts were facing the
following problems no advanced classes offered
lack of teachers e.g. Spanish and no continuing
education courses for adults in the community.

14
  • The INFO-NET Story
  • The collaboration of school districts and Central
Texas Telephone Cooperative resulted in a grant
from the Department of Agricultures Distance
Learning and Medical Link Program for a two-way
interactive audio and video distance learning
network. The eight school districts received the
grant at the end of 1993 and in April of 1994,
the eight school districts signed an Interlocal
Agreement to establish the INFO-NET Consortium.

15
  • The INFO-NET Story
  • In June of 2001, the Info-Net Consortium was
awarded a second grant from the United States
Department of Agricultures Distance Learning and
Telemedicine (DLT) Grant Program in the amount of
463,040. Grant funds were used to build upon and
expand the existing Info-Net Distance Learning
Network by including the deployment of school
districts of Evant, Lometa, Richland Springs and
    San Saba.
