What Can Trees Do For You?

• Trees renew our air supply by absorbing carbon
  dioxide and giving off oxygen
• 1 acre of trees per year produces enough oxygen
  for 18 people and removes 2.6 tons of carbon
  dioxide

Environment-Friendly Tips

• Go Organic!
• Organic means chemicals werent used in the
  growing process, which decreases the amount of
  toxins in the soil
• Eat a locally produced diet.
• Grow your own food or support local farmers.
  They are usually better quality foods, it
  increases jobs and farmlands, and reduces
  pollution generated by transportation.

More Environmentally Friendly Tips

• Purchase paper products that contain
  post-consumer recycled paper
• A ton of recycled paper uses 64 less energy,
  50 less water, 74 less air pollution, saves 17
  trees, and creates 5 times more jobs than 1 ton
  of paper products from virgin wood pulp.
• e-Recycle
• Batteries, computers, TVs, etc. must be recycled!
  They contain chemicals that are toxic if they end
  up in landfills.

Going Green When Shopping

• Paper or plastic?
• Neither ! (use re-useable bags). However, if you
  have to choose one, choose the type you are more
  likely to use again for other purposes
• Bulk is better
• Can avoid excess packaging materials. Products
  in concentrated form also use less packaging.

Compost

• HDH now uses compostable products for all to-go
  items
• UCSD has a composting team
• As well as other green orgs Green Campus,
  Biofuels Action and Awareness Group, Vegetarian
  Environmental Group
• Yard trimmings and food residuals together
  constitute 24 of the US solid waste stream
• All of that could be composted to save landfill
  space!

What is Composting?

• Combining organic wastes (manures, food) in
  proper ratios into piles and allowing it to
  breakdown creates compost (new soil)
