Title: VIKING STORIES

1
VIKING STORIES THE VIKINGS LIVED IN A VERY
DIFFERENT TIME TO US. THEY DIDNT HAVE TV, BRICK
HOUSES, TRAINS PLANES AND NEWSPAPERS. THEY
COULDNT PASS ON THERE STORIES BY TELEPHONING A
FRIEND, OR READ THE LATEST BOOK BY BUYING
IT. THEY COULDNT DISCUSS THE LATEST EPISODE OF
EASTENDERS, OR SPONGE BOB SQUARE PANTS. THEY
LIVED IN COLD LANDS WITH HARD LIVES WHERE WAR,
POWER AND BATTLES WERE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
LIFE AND DEATH.
2
VIKING STORIES SO HOW DID THE VIKINGS PASS ON
THEIR STORIES AND THEIR BELIEFS. ONE WAY
WASBY WORD OF MOUTH. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT
THIS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ENOUGH TO SUCCESSFULLY
PASS THEIR STORIES ON FOR YEARS TO COME?
3
VIKING STORIES VIKINGS ALSO PASSED ON THEIR
STORIES BY DRAWING PICTURES. THEY USED TAPESTRY,
SEWN ON PICTURES, AND PICTURES CARVED INTO WOOD
AND METAL
WE STILL SEE THE VIKINGS INFLUENCE LATER IN
HISTORY. SEEN IN STORY TELLING TAPESTRIES SUCH AS
THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY WHICH IS OVER 80 METRES LONG
4
HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF THE BAYEAUX TAPESTRY,
IT TELLS US A LONG BATTLE STORY. WHAT PICTURES
HERE REMIND US OF THE VIKINGS?
5
TODAYS TASK YOU ARE GOING TO HEAR A VIKING
BATTLE STORY AND WORKING IN GROUPS BREAK YOUR
STORY DOWN INTO LITTLE PARTS SO THAT EACH OF YOU
CAN DRAW A PICTURE. LETS TRY THIS EXAMPLE BELOW
TOGETHER
King Harald and King Arnvid sent out war arrows
at each other, a great many Vikings gathered. The
Vikings came by sea, their boats brightly
decorated There were red and gold dragons with
long necks and curved tails. Sea-horses reared
out of the water. Green and gold snakes coiled
up. Sea-hawks sat with spread wings ready to fly.
6
NOW EACH TABLE WILL GET ITS OWN SECTION OF THE
STORY AND TOGETHER YOU WILL SPEND 5/10 MINUTES
DISCUSSING WHICH SECTION EACH OF YOU WILL TAKE
AND POSSIBLE WAYS TO DRAW IT. LETS GO
7
NOW USING A PEN, PENCIL AND COLOURED PENCILS
YOU NEED TO DRAW A QUICK PLAN OF HOW YOU WISH
YOUR PICTURE TO LOOK. YOU COULD USE BRIGHT
COLOURS AND DECORATION LIKE THIS
PICTURE REMEMBER THESE PICTURES WILL ALL FIT
TOGETHER IN ONE BIG MURAL YOU CAN USE SOME
PICTURES I HAVE GIVEN YOU TO INSPIRE YOUR DRAWINGS

King Harald and King Arnvid sent out war arrows

decorated There were red and gold dragons with

out of the water. Green and gold snakes coiled
up. Sea-hawks sat with spread wings ready to fly.
The horns blew, and sails were let down, it was
like the spreading of hundreds of flags. Some
were striped black and yellow or blue and gold.
Some were white with a black raven or a brown
bear on them, or blue with a white sea-hawk, or
black with a gold sun. As the wind blew and the
ships moved, the men waved their hands to the
women on shore and sang "To the sea! To the sea!
The wind in our sail, The sea in our face, And
the smell of the fight. After ship meets ship,
In the quarrel of swords King Harald shall lie
In the caves under the sea And Norsemen shall
laugh." The battle began Arnvid's people had
taken down their sails The horn blew, and quickly
every man sprang to attention. All were leaning
forward with clenched teeth and widespread
nostrils. They were clutching their swords in
their hands. Their flashing eyes looked over
their shields. The men began to swing swords at
each other and some began to shoot arrows into
the ships opposite them. King Harald's and King
Arnvid's. men fought fearlessly and King Harald
and his men begun to jump on the enemies
boats He comes like a mad wolf," King Arnvid's
men said, and they turned and ran back below the
deck. Arnvid himself leaped forward but Harald's
sword struck him, and he fell dead. Arnvids men
were so scared they jumped into the chilly ocean
