Book Chats at Bradford
  • Bradford Libraries have been running RaW Book
Chats - short term reading groups for literacy
    students.
  • One group from Keighley College enjoyed the
experience so much that they now want to set up
their own reading group. The group read and
listened to a Quick Read together during the
course, and then wrote reviews which were posted
    on the RaW website.
  • A tutor involved explained
  • The plan now is that we will build the reading
group concept into part of the literacy class,
maybe 20 minutes at the beginning or end of the
session. At least half the group are reading
    more.

RaW fruit and creative writing at Bradford
  • During Adult Learners Week Bradford Libraries
teamed up with Yorkshire Arts Circus to run a RaW
Creative Writing group for ESOL learners from a
    local training centre.
  • The theme was raw fruit, and author Becky Stirrup
came along to encourage participants to look at,
feel, smell and taste different fruit in order to
collect a list of words which were then included
in short poems written by the group. Later the
group used words cut from newspaper headlines to
    create poems.
  • One participant commented
  • I enjoyed the session with Rebecca, she gave us
a good idea of what poetry can be

items as a donkey stone (used to clean the
doorstep), a rag rug in the process of being
made, a stone hot water bottle other
interesting items were passed around for the
audience to look at touch and perhaps remember,
    if they were old enough.
  •
  •  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this presentation
and we received many positive verbal and written
comments. The morning ended with light

6 Book challenge at Hull libraries
  • Hull libraries have been running 6 Book
Challenge, a reading challenge for adults.
  • Participants read 6 books chosen from the First
Choice Collections with particular emphasis on

a choice of one of the Quick Read titles which
will be presented at a celebration event in June.
  • Each participant registered onto the Challenge
received a First Choice Reading Diary to use as
their personal reading record. Space is available
in the diaries to record any comments readers may
wish to make about books. There are also
opportunities to recommend and review titles for
    other borrowers.
  • So far, 71 readers have registered for the
