Concepts of the Nature GIS Prototype Ioannis
Kanellopoulos (EC-JRC) and Niko Vanraes (Ionic
Software)
2
Nature GISAccess to Information and GI
technology
  • Implement a prototype that will offer the
possibility to European Citizens, policy makers
at all levels and different stakeholders to
search, locate, retrieve and access geographic
information about protected areas in Europe.
  • The prototype will be based on International
    standards and specifications.

3
INSPIRE architectural vision
  • The architecture envisioned by INSPIRE deploys
interoperable services that will help to produce
and publish, find and access, and eventually, use
and understand geographic information over the
Internet across European Union and Association
Countries at local, national, and European levels

4
INSPIRE Principles
The following principles govern INSPIRE and will
be included in the legislation a) that spatial
data should be collected once and maintained at
the level where this can be done most
effectively b) that it must be possible to
combine seamlessly spatial data from different
sources across the EU and share it between many
users and applications c) that it must be
possible for spatial data collected at one level
of government to be shared between all the
different levels of government d) that spatial
data needed for good governance should be
available on conditions that are not restricting
its extensive use e) that it should be easy to
discover which spatial data is available, to
evaluate its fitness for purpose and to know
which conditions apply for its use.

What is a Web Map Server ?
  • The OpenGIS Web Map Server Specification (WMS) is
a set of interface specifications that provide
uniform access by Web Clients to maps rendered by
map servers on the Internet. Thus, WMS is a
    service interface specification that
  • Enables the dynamic construction of a map as a
picture, as a series of graphical elements, or as
a packaged set of geographic feature data
  • Answers basic queries about the content of the
    map
  • Can inform other programs about the maps it can
produce and which of those can be queried further

9
What is a Web Feature Server ?
  • Whereas WMS delivers a picture, WFS supports the
direct exploitation and access of feature data
and associated attributes on the Web.
  • The WFS is a service interface that describes
data manipulation on geographic features. Data
Manipulation operations include the ability to
insert, delete, update, get and query features on
    spatial and non-spatial constraints

10
What is Portrayal ?
  • Portrayal is a rule-based process to portray
information based on the feature attributes
  • To portray is the process that transforms the
    content in a presentation

What is Metadata ?
  • Traditionally metadata has been understood as
    Data about Data
  • Applications of Metadata
  • Cataloging (Item and Collections)
  • Resource Discovery
  • Electronic Commerce
  • Intelligent Software Agents
  • Digital Signatures
  • Content Rating
  • Intellectual Property Rights
  • Privacy Preferences Policies

13
Metadata for what ?
  • There are different levels that metadata may be
    used for
  • Discovery metadata - What data sets hold the
sort of data I am interested in? This enable
organizations to know and publicize what data
    holdings they have.
  • Exploration metadata - Do the identified data
sets contain sufficient information to enable a
sensible analysis to be made for my purposes?
This is documentation to be provided wit the data
to ensure that others use the data correctly and
    wisely.
  • Exploitation metadata What is the process of
obtaining and using the data that are required?
This helps end users and provider organisations
to effectively store, reuse, maintain and archive
    their data holdings.
