Recognizing the increasing seismicity in this
region and vulnerability of earthquake disaster
especially in cities due to 1.high density of
population, 2.unplanned infrastructure
and 3.close proximity with India and Myanmars
active seismic area GoB has given more
emphasis on earthquake preparedness and has been
implemented a project in 2006 for the
establishment of three new earthquake monitoring
stations along with up-gradation of the existing
one for monitoring of earthquake in and around
Bangladesh.

Background of Seismic Monitoringin Bangladesh
  • One earthquake station was established in
Chittagong, coastal city of Bangladesh in 1954,
till now twice the seismic instrument was
    upgraded with the available system.

27
Seismic network
  • Seismic monitoring nation-wide consists of Six
Digital Broad-Band Seismometer (two Bore hole,
four vault type), Six Digital Triaxial
    Accelerometers with GPS synchronization.
  • Continuous data acquisition system. Networking
among the four stations have been done by
dedicated digital data network (DDN Link) for
data transmission to the central data collection
and processing center in BMD Headquarter.
  • The central data collection and processing center
will be networked with Geology Department of
Dhaka University, BUET, Geological Survey of
    Bangladesh for promotion research.

28
  • Earthquake information generated from the central
data collection and processing center of BMD
share with all professional institutions and DMB
(DMIC) disseminates the bulletin to community for
preparedness and mitigation using its existing
    network.

29
Towards the formation of Bangladesh National
Tsunami Warning Centre
  • In consideration of vulnerability, Government of
Bangladesh is eager to be associated with the
    International efforts to establish National
Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) in Bangladesh.
  • Functional NTWC would support national as well as
    regional Disaster Management System.
