Case Study - .NET and Portal Development
MICROSOFT Client Profile Microsofts Partner
Pavilion and Expos Program (MPP) is a business
unit that sells exhibit space packages to
Microsofts partners at industry trade shows and
events.   Challenge MPP needed to reduce the
cost of administering exhibit booth sales at
industry events by pushing as much of the process
as possible to the Web.   Solution DDLabs
created a user-friendly site capable of rewarding
partners with a rich and flexible user
experience. We enabled MPP to give partners the
ability to seek out, register and purchase booth
space while enjoying control over a wide range of
account information. We also developed an
innovative Macromedia Flash Floor map to display
booth space location and availability in real
time via connectivity with the database. DDLabs
also simplified MPPs processes and increased
productivity by migrating to Microsofts cutting
edge .NET platform. Over 10,000 partners and
100,000 event registrations annually.

Case Study .NET and Streaming Applications
NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE (NCI/NIH) Client
Profile As a part of the National Institutes of
Health (NIH), the National Cancer Institute (NCI)
has a mission to improve cancer-related research,
training, and information dissemination. NCI is
broken down into many divisions that focus on
providing technology research, usability studies,
and effective utilization of emerging
technologies to support their mission. Challenge
As an information-based organization, NCI
produces a vast amount of content daily including
research articles, booklets, and presentations.
NCI decided to research and pilot technologies
that would enhance dissemination of information
captured during live events in hopes to reduce
associated costs and increase knowledge transfer.
In particular, NCI wanted to investigate
technologies that could provide synchronized
audio and slide capabilities that replicate a
past event. Solution DDLabs created a .NET
Application (converting existing VB 6 and some
ASP apps into an integrated app) and a
presentation capture and delivery tool to allow
replication of a past event to enhance
information dissemination. The solution involved
producing digital content, implementing and
hosting a delivery-only pilot system, providing
usage statistics and supporting usability testing
on the pilot system, developing a delivery
solution framework for enterprise-wide
distribution, and prototyping a capture tool to
decrease production time and costs.

THE PAXTON COMPANIES Client Profile The Paxton
Companies are a global moving and relocation
services company based in Springfield, VA. Paxton
provides corporate and personal moving services
to clients of all sizes with a variety of
needs.   Challenge Paxton engaged DDLabs for two
specific initiatives to develop a corporate
extranet portal for their large accounts, and to
provide maintenance services using the DD.UP
model. Paxton needed a dedicated platform to
provide enhanced services and billing options to
their larger accounts, and needed to provide a
communication vehicle to conduct these
relationships. Paxton was under pressure to
introduce this system on an aggressive timeframe
to meet the needs of their customers.   Solution
DDLabs conducted a full project engagement to
develop the corporate extranet and establish the
initial customers on the system in accordance
with the Paxton timeframe. Following the launch,
DDLabs is continuing to maintain the system for
Paxton as part of an ongoing maintenance
relationship on their software platform. This
effort includes continuous development,
outsourced testing and management of the
application.

Case Study .NET and Outsourced Maintenance
GENERAL ELECTRIC Client Profile GE Global
Exchange Services operates one of the largest B2B
eCommerce networks in the world, with over
100,000 trading partners worldwide. This network
supports over one billion transactions a year,
representing over one trillion dollars of goods
and services. This marketplace provides it
members with features that include procurement
management, collaboration, RFQs, dynamic buying
and selling of indirect and direct goods,
multi-catalogue management and data
conversion.   Challenge Although GE had custom
developed many aspects of the Express
Marketplace, the company decided to use
third-party software built by Commerce One to
provide their customers with robust procurement
functionality. GE also had the need to test the
new application and the hundreds of application
interfaces on an ongoing basis and as new product
partners were added.   Solution As a Microsoft
partner, DDLabs helped develop its .NET
architecture and XML Portal Connector (XPC)
integration tool. DDLabs used this intimate
knowledge of XPC to integrate the procurement
software with GEs Express Marketplace
components. This integration required DDLabs
developers to use their extensive experience in
.NET and eCommerce application integration.
DDLabs also established an offsite support center
and an integrated testing process to ensure that
GE could ensure that as new partners were added
to the system, that all interfaces were tested on
an iterative basis. DDLabs provides ongoing
maintenance and support services to GE.

Case Study Testing and QA
MERCK MEDCO Profile Merck is the worlds
largest drug company with year 2000 sales in
excess of 40 billion. While Merck is known
largely as a drug manufacturer, almost half
of its sales are generated by its prescription
benefits management subsidiary, Merck-Medco.
More than 65 million Americans are served by
Merck-Medco through clients that include Fortune
500 corporations, unions, health maintenance
organizations, Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans,
insurance carriers and other similar
organizations.   Business Challenge Merck-Medco
uses sophisticated information systems to link
patients, pharmacists and physicians, to ensure
appropriate drug use for each individual based
upon their health profile, best clinical
practices and benefit plan coverage. Merck-Medco
must process a huge volume of intricately related
data to quickly spot and report potential drug
interaction problems that could pose safety risks
to patients. However, due to the complexity of
the current processes, it often takes between 18
and 45 days to process the captured data and
produce reports for delivery to physicians.
Additionally, the current systems do not support
the degree of flexibility needed to accommodate
changing reporting needs in a rapid and cost
effective manner.   Solution Merck-Medco
partnered with DDLabs to setup an ongoing testing
center and new testing process to accommodate the
complexity of these challenges. The Retrospective
Product Integration (RPI) project was designed to
combine physician profiling and prescription
claim alerts into a consolidated, coherent
communication to 500,000 physicians each quarter.
It will capture every prescription that is
written and filed under Merck-Medco plans and
load the data into a data warehouse.

NETWORK SOLUTIONS/VERISIGN Profile VeriSign,
Inc. is the leading provider of trusted
infrastructure services to web sites,
enterprises, electronic commerce service
providers and individuals. The company's domain
name, digital certificate and payment services
provide the critical web identity, authentication
and transaction infrastructure that online
businesses require to conduct secure e-commerce
and communications. VeriSign's services are
available through its Web site or through its
direct sales force and reseller partners around
the world. Business Challenge The Network
Solutions storefront offers many of these
products, but in some cases, forces the user to
other VeriSign sites for fulfillment of the
products and services.  DDLabs was tasked with
redesigning a new storefront Web site that will
offer an improved customer experience and
eliminate the disjointed experience presently
encountered by end users. Business Solution
DDLabs completed a redesign of the
VeriSign/Network Solutions Web properties
including a conglomerate of eight separate Web
sites that offer everything from domain names,
packaged Web sites and hosting services to
security certificates.  The initial scope of the
project called for a two-phased effort that would
offer a quick, tactical fix to the look and feel
of the site and the secondary, or Strategic
phase, would offer recommendations on content
management, tracking and reporting and a
competitive analysis. Also, DDLabs design group
continues to perform usability testing and
engineering services and has outsourced this
effort on an ongoing basis..
31
Case Study EAI, XML and Data Mining
BOEING Profile The Boeing Company was founded
in 1916 and is now the one of the worlds leading
aerospace companies. Boeing is the world's
largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and
military aircraft. The company's profile also
includes helicopters, electronic and defense
systems, missiles, rocket engines, launch
systems, and advanced information and
communication systems. Boeing provides products
and services to customers in 145 countries.
Business Challenge Boeing established an
internal eBusiness Group to help it harness the
power of electronic commerce and to formulate
long-term eBusiness strategies. One of the
challenges facing the eBusiness Group is the fact
that Boeings multiple information systems share
the same data, but each system has separate data
format requirements. Business Solution DDLabs
partnered with Boeing to develop an XML-based
solution to allow for purchase order data in XML
format to be easily converted into EDI, flat
file, or Commerce Ones xCBL format. DDLabs used
XMLs solutions Schema Central and XEDI
Translator tools. The purchase order data was
converted from XEDI to EDI, EDI to XEDI, XML to
xCBL and xCBL to XML.

Case Study .NET, XML and Data Mining
EATON Profile Eaton Corporation is a global 8
billion diversified industrial manufacturer that
is a leader in fluid power systems electrical
power quality, distribution and control
automotive engine air management and fuel
economy and intelligent truck systems for fuel
economy and safety. Eaton's 59,000 employees work
in 24 countries on six continents. Challenge
Eaton wanted to augment its existing website with
a supplier specific secured area, in which each
supplier could view and edit shipping schedule
related data online. Eaton is moving towards
harnessing the power of electronic commerce and
has developed an initiative to be of 80 percent
digital by 2001.   Solution DDLabs partnered
with XML Solutions to develop a .NET solution
that would enable Eatons suppliers to securely
login and view and edit shipping schedule
information via a web form. XMLSolutions
Business Integration Platform (BIP) performed
transformation of data across data formats such
as EDI and XML. Smaller suppliers unable to
afford EDI were able to conduct real time
business via the Internet, eliminating the use of
fax, phone, and e-mail. Eaton Trucking is
currently rolling out the solution to its
suppliers.
