What is SIOP?
Sheltered instruction is an approach for
teaching content to English language learners in
strategic ways that make the subject matter
concepts comprehensible while promoting the
students English language development. The

Content Area Vocabulary
  • Mathematics and language are intricately
    connected, language facilitates mathematical
    thinking. It also incorporates "everyday
    vocabulary that takes on a different meaning in
    mathematics," like equal, rational, irrational,
    column, and table (Dale Cuevas, 1992).
