Title: UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory

1
UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory
  • EUCLID RTP 11.13
  • Realising the Potential of Networked Simulation
    in Europe

2
EUCLID RTP 11.13Presentation Outline
  • Programme Background
  • Overview of Programme
  • Key Issues and Summary
  • Collaboration and exploitation
  • Responsibilities and authority
  • Increased awareness
  • Exploitation

3
EUCLID 11.13 Background
  • EUCLID
  • EUropean Co-Operation for the Long-term In
    Defence
  • Collaborative, pre-competitive research programme
  • Customer
  • Western European Union Armaments Group (WEAG)
study funded by 13 National MoDs
  • Programme details
  • 17M Euros funded by MoDs and Industry
  • UK MOD Funding Line - CRP (SSS Domain), ARP1,
    ARP5, ARP7
  • Primed by Thales Training Simulation (UK)
  • 9 Work Packages (WPs) resourced by 23 Industrial
    Entities (IEs)
  • Representatives from each MoD form Management
    Group (MG)
  • UK MoD (Dstl) Chair Management Group
  • MG Meetings held every 6 months (April and
    November)
  • Duration - November 2000 to October 2003
  • Final demonstration scheduled for November 2003

EUCLID 11.13 Participants
5
EUCLID 11.13 Key Objectives
  • Determine and mitigate obstacles which prevent
networked simulations being exploited in Europe
  • Define a set of processes and tools which will
provide European nations with a common baseline
    to support SE development life-cycles
  • SE Requirements Capture
  • SE Development, Execution and Evaluation
  • SE Asset Management
  • characterisation of simulation and SE assets
  • storage, search and retrieval mechanisms via use
    of repository infrastructures

6
EUCLID 11.13 - Key SE Issues
  • Potential of SEs are not being fully realised
    because
  • SE requirements capture needs to be more rigorous
  • SE Infrastructure Services need to be readily
    available and cost effective
  • secure networks, standards, testing,
    repositories, shared data environments
  • SE solutions are often perceived to be too costly
  • SE analysis / assessment methods have not been
    fully addressed
  • SE implementations are considered not to be
    flexible in many cases
  • need to exploit information/data reuse, e.g.
    Synthetic Natural Environment data
  • Exploitation of SEs within Europe requires
  • Common processes
  • Common tools
  • Common standards
  • Generic solution for all problem domains (e.g.
    training, rehearsal, acquisition)

EUCLID 11.13Key Issues and Summary
  • Active Collaboration
  • SISO FEDEP Productisation Group (FPG)
  • The SISO FEDEP will include an additional Step,
reflecting the work that has been ongoing within
    the RTP 11.13 SEDEP activity
  • EUCLID RTP 11.13 WP 1
  • NATO MSG005-TG005
  • Availability of supporting tools for the FEDEP in
    the NATO Pathfinder project
  • EUCLID RTP 11.13 WP 2-6, 8
  • NATO MSG011-TG008
  • HLA compliance testing process and tools
  • EUCLID RTP 11.13 WP 4
  • NATO MSG012-TG009
  • Characterisation of assets and suitability of RTP
11.13 Repository as part of a NATO Simulation
    Resource Library (SRL)
  • EUCLID RTP 11.13 WP 3, 8

10
EUCLID 11.13Key Issues and Summary (2)
  • General Issues
  • Single Lead Industrial Entity (SLIE)
  • Responsibility with little Authority over under
    achievers
  • Industrial Entities (IEs)
  • Level of capability / contribution not ideal in
    all cases
  • Programme Structure and Output
  • WE dependency on more than one organisation
  • complicates ownership issues
  • Increase awareness
  • Exploitation

11
EUCLID 11.13Key Issues and Summary (3)
  • Euclid RTP 11.13 is a major European initiative
  • Provides a unique opportunity to determine what
    SE stakeholders require
  • Problem Setters / Problem Solvers / Users
  • Provides a conceptual framework for mitigating
some of the obstacles that prevent the
    exploitation of SEs
  • Project critical phase (Jan 2002 - April 2003)
  • Production of Prototype Software Tools
  • Close links established with SISO
  • US FEDEP Product Development Group (PDG)
  • An Internet Web Site is available
