Step 1 Understand the Assignment
  • Read Standard IX.
  • Consult with your instructor.

Purposes of Your Digital Portfolio
  • MAIN PURPOSETo demonstrate that you have met
    Standard IX by utilizing technology in your
    classroom.
  • SECONDARY PURPOSE To show to prospective
    employers, to help you land a job (optional?).

Step 2Develop/Teach Unit Using Technology
  • Develop lesson plans other materials that make
    use of two computer-based, and two
    non-computer-based, technologies.
  • Document your work (written lesson plans, digital
    pictures, video, etc.)

Step 3Choose a Format
  • Website (FrontPage)?
  • Lectora?
  • PowerPoint?
  • Other?
  • I will use PowerPoint 2003 in this
    demonstration

Step 4Get Organized
  • Decide what you want to include.
  • Sketch the outline of your presentation.
  • Determine internal navigation.

Step 5 Collect All Existing Materials
  • Word files (convert to PDF). Free PDF Maker
    www.pdfforge.org/products/pdfcreator/download
    (shows up as a printer)
  • Printouts (can be scanned)
  • Photos (can be scanned)
  • Videos
  • Audio/music files?
  • Websites
  • Any other relevant items

Photos
  • JPG or GIF format is best
  • Optimize if possible (Photoshop or Export from MS
    Picture Manager)
  • Can be scanned or taken directly from digital
    camera

Video
  • Types of cameras, connectors
  • Choose appropriate clip
  • Transfer to computer
  • Clip and edit
  • Keep length under 2 minutes
  • WMV format is best (also MPG)
  • Avoid MOV format (Quicktime) if possible

Step 6 Create a Folder
  • Put all existing files in this folder.
  • Save your main presentation in this same folder.
  • Never put spaces or odd characters in file names.
  • KEEP ALL FILES IN THIS FOLDER AT ALL TIMES.
  • NEVER LINK TO ANY FILE OUTSIDE THIS FOLDER.
  • This is the best time to come to the LTL.

Moving Stuff Around(Coming to the LTL?)
  • Always copy-n-paste the ENTIRE FOLDER.
  • DO NOT use Save As.
  • Jump Drives are great!
  • CD-ROMs can work.
  • Disks hold little, and are unreliable (always
    make a backup)

A Picture is Worth
  • Sample PortfolioServes to illustrate the format
    and makeup of digital portfolios. Dont feel as
    if you need to copy it exactly.

The Last StepSaving Your Final Copy
  • Must be on CD-R
  • Use File--Package for CD
  • Opens automatically
  • Checks for missing elements
  • Includes a PowerPoint viewer
  • Make a copy for yourself.
