AIMS
  • Create opportunities for medical students to
  • pursue joint degrees through the school of
    medicine
  • become involved in basic and clinical research
    early in their careers
  • enhance their leadership skills
  • develop their interest in academic medicine
  • Produce the next generation of healthcare
    leaders, medical faculty and clinical researchers

KEY COMPONENTS
  • MD/JD
  • Collaborative agreement with the University of
    Puerto Rico Law School
  • Students earn both their legal and medical
    degrees over the course of six years
  • 4 students enrolled one will graduate in June
    2006
  • MD/PhD
  • Collaborative agreement with Mayo Graduate
    School, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine (Medical
    Scientist Training Program)
  • Takes about seven to eight years to complete
  • 3 students enrolled one will graduate in June
    2006.
  • At Mayo Clinic students receive full tuition and
    a stipend

APPLICATION
  • Students are first interviewed by the Assistant
    Dean for Student Affairs of the School of
    Medicine
  • Applicants must meet the admission requirements
    of selected degree program
  • Prior to starting the dual degree program
    students must complete two years of medical
    school and pass the USMLE Step 1

FUTURE PLANS
  • MD/MPH in developing stage with the School of
    Public Health, University of Puerto Rico
  • MD/PhD - Collaborative agreement with MD Anderson
    Cancer Center (agreement in process)
  • MD/MS in Clinical Research in developing stage
    with the Master Program in Clinical Research,
    Medical Sciences Campus
  • Explore opportunities for students to participate
    in clinical activities while pursuing the second
    degree
  • Develop a required review course in Clinical
    Skills for students returning to the MD program

    in Spain
