Title: Self Efficacy

1
Self Efficacy
  • Self-confidence in a sport-specific situation

2
Objectives
  • Identify what is meant by self-efficacy
  • Describe Banduras theory of self-efficacy
  • Discuss strategies to develop self-efficacy and
    to combat learned helplessness

3
Self Efficacy
  • Definition The degree of self-confidence
experienced by a performer when placed in a
    specific situation
  • Self efficacy is different from self confidence
as it applies to a situation (sporting) rather
    than life in general
  • Eg Goalscorer (scoring after not scoring for a
    few games)
  • Goalscorer (after a bad miss)
  • Applies to individuals and teams

4
Individual level of Self-efficacy can affect
  • Choice of activity high levels will ensure
    participation
  • Amount of effort applied
  • high effort high motivation
  • Level of persistence
  • high levels maintain effort and commitment

5
Task
  • Complete Task 2 on p.136
  • 5 minutes

6
Banduras model of Self-efficacy

Vicarious Experiences
Verbal Persuasion
Past Experiences/Performance Accomplishments
Emotional Arousal
Efficacy expectations
SPORTING PERFORMANCE
All 4 factors are positive, the performer will
believe he/she will do well/succeed
7
The 4 Determinants
  • Past experiences/accomplishments If you have
done it before, you will be confident of doing it
    again e.g?
  • Vicarious experience You will feel able if you
have seen others (especially peers) achieving the
    task e.g?
  • Verbal persuasion Encouragement from
significant others will lead to increased
    self-efficacy e.g?
  • Emotional arousal Perceive arousal level in a
    positive manner before competition greater
    chance of developing S.E

8
Task
  • Mindmap strategies to develop high levels of
    Self-efficacy (p.137)
  • 5 mins

9
Learned Helplessness (Dweck, 1975)
  • Definition Feelings experienced by an
individual when he or she believes that failure
is inevitable because of negative past
    experiences

10
Learned Helplessness
  • Performers attribute failure to internal, stable
factors such as ability. They feel that failure
is the only viable outcome when faced with a
    particular situation
  • Criticism, negative feedback, lack of success,
    unrealistic demonstrations/expectations, social
comparison can all lead to a state of L.H.

11
From High S.E to L.H!
High Self-efficacy
Neg exp. inappropriate attributions
Lower Self-efficacy
Learned Helplessness
Specific L.H Certain sports
General L.H all sports/types of sport
12
What can you do about it?
  • 3 most important factors
  • Attribution re-training
  • Highlight performance goals
  • Use correct attributions (external factors)
  • You can also use all the strategies used to
    improve S.E

13
Task
  • Complete task 3 p.139
  • 5 mins
  • H/W Complete revision Qs on p. 134/139.
