AASE
  • AASE has been designed to meet the needs of young
    people (aged 16-18) who have the realistic
    potential to achieve excellence in their sport
    and are seeking to perform at the highest level
    as their main career goal.
  • Notionally taking two-years to complete, the AASE
    framework will provide for the first time a
    structured national training and development
    route, across all sports, for talented young
    athletes, many of whom may go to represent their
    country on the world stage.

Elite Categories of Involvement
  • The Apprenticeship is designed for four
    categories of involvement
  • full-time contracted apprentices at professional
    clubs
  • full-time elite athletes receiving support from
    the lottery world class programme or identified
    by the NGB
  • any young people involved in the Talented Athlete
    Scholarship Scheme (TASS)
  • those talented young people in the academy
    environment no yet offered full time terms

AASE Content
  • NVQ (Edexcel) in Achieving Excellence in Sports
    Performance
  • 8 Units (tactical, technical, physiological,
    psychological lifestyle, wider career, health
    and safety, communication)
  • Key Skills in Communication, Application of
    Number, Problem Solving, Working With Others,
    Improving Own Learning and Performance)
  • 780 GLH of Technical Certificate
  • Can include any A or AS Level, GCSEs, vocational
    qualifications relevant to future aspirations
    (e.g. coaching, fitness, sports development,
    business)
  • 10k funding over (notionally) 2 years!

AASE where are we now??
  • AASE currently being delivered across Premier
    League and Football Leagues Golf Rugby Union
    pilots in SW
  • SkillsActive is currently in discussion with a
    number of other competitive sports across
    England, including cricket, rugby union,
    swimming, tennis and golf about national delivery
    from 09/06
  • SkillsActive and Sussex Downs College in Brighton
    have bid for 900k ESF for Olympic and Paralympic
    sports and AASE rowing, swimming, tennis,
    badminton, athletics, triathlon and basketball
  • We will be looking for other sports to
    incorporate AASE into their education programmes
    in the future and welcome discussions with any
    interested parties

Young Apprenticeships
  • New DfES initiative started in September 2004
  • Aimed at 14 to 16 year old high achievers
  • 2 year programme funding 6k per individual
  • 3 days a week in mainstream education following
    core National Curriculum subjects
  • 2 days a week in college and/or workplace
  • Level 2 vocational qualification as the core
    offer
  • NVQ Level 1 for structuring the work experience
  • Other smaller L1/L2 qualifications as options
    (e.g. JSLA)
  • 50 days minimum spent in work placement
  • DfES led DCMS supported YST partners

Young Apprenticeships in Sport
  • Started in Cohort 2 September 2005
  • 2 partnerships Lowestoft and Brighton (50
    pupils)
  • Lowestoft focussing on coaching and leadership
  • Brighton focussing on leisure operations and
    facilities
  • Cohort 3 September 2006
  • 13 partnerships 11 new partnerships across
    England
  • Partnerships identified by SkA or themselves or
    YST
  • Each partnership contains a range of schools, FE
    or WBL providers, EBPs, LEAs, Connexions, 14/19
    Leads, employers
  • Selection processes crucial high achievers

YAs what does this mean for NGBs??
  • Each partnership needs quality work experience
    offers from employers
  • The 13 partnerships are shared across the 9
    English regions
  • 350 pupils on programme from 09/06
  • Huge pool of young talent for NGBs to identify
    future coaches and officials
  • Work with schools/colleges locally or nationally
    and improve links into education
  • Work placements could be with NGB DOs, in local
    clubs, community initiatives, summer camps, after
    school clubs
  • e.g. British Triathlon in Lowestoft
