Parade of Planets
  • An Imaginary Voyage Through the Solar System

3
Mercury
  • Mercury is closest to the sun, therefore it is
    the hottest planet.
  • It takes only 88 days for Mercury to go around
the sun, but its day is 59 Earth days long.
  • Mercury is only slightly larger than our moon.
  • There is no atmosphere.
  • Mercurys temperatures range from 800 degrees F
in the sunlight to 300 degrees F in the dark.
  • Mercury has no moons.

4
Venus
  • Venus is nearly the same size as the Earth.
  • Its atmosphere is mostly sulfuric acid and
    carbon dioxide.
  • Temperatures are about 900 degrees F on the
    surface.
  • A human being would be dissolved, roasted, and
    crushed by its atmosphere.
  • Venus rotates once every 243 Earth days.
  • It travels around the sun in 255 days.
  • Venus has no moons.

5
Earth
  • Earths atmosphere protects us form the suns
    heat.
  • About 71 of the Earth is covered by water
  • Located in the life zone of the solar system.
  • Earth rotates once every 24 hours.
  • It travels around the sun in 365 days.
  • There is one moon orbiting Earth.

6
Mars
  • Mars looks like a red star in the night sky.
  • The rocks on the surface of Mars have a great
deal of iron in them, rusting in the moisture
    of the thin atmosphere.
  • Running water that was once on Mars is now frozen
in the soil and polar ice caps of the planet.
  • Mars is about half the size of Earth.
  • The day is about the same length as an Earth day.
  • There are 2 moons orbiting Mars, but they are
very small and not shaped like a sphere.

7
Jupiter
  • Jupiter is the largest of the planets.
  • One cloud formation on Jupiter is the Great Red
Spot a storm that has been raging at least 300
    years.
  • The planet is made mostly of clouds of liquid
hydrogen, which get extremely hot near the
    center.
  • Jupiter swirls on its axis at unbelievable speed
    once every 10 hours.
  • A year on Jupiter is equal to 12 Earth years.
  • Jupiter has at least 16 moons.

8
Saturn
  • Saturn has the largest system of rings.
  • The rings are made of rock and ice orbiting
around the equator of the planet.
  • Saturns atmosphere is mostly liquid hydrogen and
    is constantly stormy.
  • Saturn rotates in 10 hours and takes about 29 ½
Earth years to orbit the sun.
  • Saturn has about 20 moons, the largest being
    Titan.

9
Uranus
  • Uranus has a thin ring system orbiting its
    equator.
  • Four Earths could fit across the diameter of
    Uranus.
  • A day on Uranus is about 17 hours long.
  • One trip around the sun takes 84 years.
  • Uranus has 15 moons.
  • Ten of the 15 moons were discovered in 1986 when
    Voyager flew by.

10
Neptune
  • The pale blue color is from clouds of hydrogen
    and helium.
  • Neptune is 30 times farther from the sun than
    Earth.
  • One year on Neptune is equal to 165 Earth years!
  • Neptune has a hurricane raging in its atmosphere
that forms a huge dark spot.
  • There are eight moons orbiting the planet.
  • Triton, the largest, has geysers that spew
    invisible nitrogen gas.

11
Pluto
  • Pluto is probably made of ice. Not ice made from
water, but ice made of frozen nitrogen.
  • There are times when Pluto is closer to the sun
thatn Neptune, making it the eighth planet for
roughly 20 years at a time.
  • The air is made mostly of nitrogen gas.
  • The presence of nearby Charon draws molecules
escaping from Plutos atmosphere to the surface
    of Charon.
