There is no particular mystery in animationits
really very simple, and like anything that is
simple, it is about the hardest thing in the
world to do. --Bill Tytla at the Walt Disney
Studio, June 28, 1937
3
Computer Animation
  • Creating moving images through the use of
    computers
  • Can be done using both computer graphics and
    animation.
  • It is created by 3D computer graphics

4
Computer Graphics
  • Computer graphics is digitally synthesizing and
manipulating the visual content that one has.
  • This often refers to 3D computer graphics but
also includes two dimensional graphics and image
    processing.

5
Animation
  • Animation can be produced in two ways
  • Create a succession of cartoon frames, which are
    combined into a film
  • Use physical models, which are positioned and
    then filmed

6
3D Computer Graphics
  • Graphics that utilize a 3D representation of
geometric data that is stored in the computer

7
Pixars Short Animated Films
  • The computer animated industry started with short
    films.
  • John Lasseter created the studios first short
film Luxo, Jr. which is about a desk lamp and its
    child.
  • This led to another animated film, which won an
    academy award called Tin Toy.
  • Tin Toy led to the creation of Toy Story.

Luxo, Jr.
8
Toy Story
  • Toy Story was the first all-computer animated
    feature
  • The idea came from Tin Toy but didnt think the
toy would be loved by children.
  • Toy Story was created by John Lasseter, the
    Walt Disney of animation.

9
The Making of Toy Story
  • Sculpture
  • Gave an idea of what the character would look
like and also a glimpse of what scale,
complexity, movements, and expressions would be
    needed.
  • Visualization
  • Voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were done first
to visualize the faces and reactions of what the
    characters would look like.

10
The Making (Cont.)
  • Animation
  • RenderMan
  • Allowed the visual effects artists to handle very
    large renderings at ease.
  • Lines of Code
  • Woody-52,865 lines of code, 712 different
animation controls, and 212 in his face, 26
    texture maps
  • Buzz-189 texture maps
  • There were 25,000 storyboards and each and every
move by the characters had to be animated

11
Finally
  • Rendering took a total of 800,000 hours together.
  • The sounds, graphics and more took 2 terabytes
which is 2 trillion bytes of space.
  • Made a 79 minute movie that was the first film to
    be entirely rendered by computer.
