Identification Process
  • The majority of the students are identified
    through Child Find
  • Other students may come through the Transition
    process between Baby Net and the school district

Rationale
  • Important to have good collaboration between the
    SLP and the Preschool Itinerant (PI) teacher.
  • The SLP and the PI use the same curriculum.
  • Objectives are addressed 4 times a week versus 2
    times.

Units Developed
  • Each month pick 1-2 topics
  • Choose a target book, vocabulary, finger plays
    and nursery rhymes
  • The SLP and PI use the same vocabulary, concepts,
    books, songs and nursery rhymes
  • Some examples pets, spiders pumpkins, food,
    clothes and weather

  • Language objects representing the vocabulary
    items, pictures, books, flannel board pieces
  • Fine Motor lacing, scissors, paper, stickers,
    stringing beads, clothes pins
  • Cognitive objects, color wheels, magnetic
    shapes, thematic stickers

Types of Activities
  • Language book-making, matching pictures/objects,
    answering questions, labeling, positional
    concepts with objects
  • Fine Motor cutting, drawing, lacing, stringing,
    gluing
  • Cognitive counting objects and stickers, match
    name colors, match name shapes

  • Unit Theme Farm Animals
  • Target Book The Big Red Barn
  • Materials book, pictures of farm animals, toy
    farm animals, toy farm, color wheels, lacing
    and cutting materials
  • Language Activities label pictures, answer
    questions about story, retell story using story
    cards, do Position sheets, match Mama/Baby
    animals, make a Farmer, Farmer who do you feed?
    book , learn Baa Baa Black Sheep nursery rhyme,
    work on spatial concepts using the farm animals
    and farm items (in front of the wagon, behind the
    fence)

Parent Involvement
  • A newsletter is sent home each month with the
    unit of the month, vocabulary pictures, nursery
    rhymes/songs and a cut-out to use for spatial
    concepts
  • A copy of the target book is sent home for a few
    days
  • Teacher-made positional books are also sent home
    for a few days

Parent Workshops
  • Three workshops are held with the parents
  • Introduction explanation of the program,
    community resources, literacy tips
  • Make N Take parents make a book to take home
  • Preparation explain the Child Development
    program, suggestions for summer

Reward Program
  • Parents fill out a Reading Log to keep track of
    books read to the child
  • Students receive rewards for having books read to
    them stickers, finger puppets, etc.
  • Parents receive a book purchased for their child
    at the end of the year for participating in the
    program
