Title: AUM SHINRIKYO

1
AUM SHINRIKYO
  • Issue 4
  • Strategy, Targets and Methods of Operations

2
Primary Goal Jump-Start ArmageddonSecondary
Goal Continue to expand the following of the
cult.
  • The Hibiya Metro Line This is an example of Aum
Shinrikyos target for their release of Sarin gas
on the Tokyo subway system which killed 12 and
injured more than 5,000 Japanese citizens.
  • Aum experimented with various deadly toxins,
including mustard gas, VX, and hydrogen cyanide.
However sarin became the primary focus of the
    group.

3
Methods of Operations
  • The chemical formula for the deadly agent, Sarin
  • Here we can clearly see the effect of the gas on
commuters and the reactions of those most
    directly affected.

4
Immediate Fallout
  • Do to the magnitude of the attacks, the Japanese
government commenced a campaign to crush Aum
Shinrikyo almost immediately after the attack.
In partnership with the FBI, the Japanese
national police launched a series of raids on Aum
    facilities.
  • Here we see a wanted poster for three suspects
wanted in connection to the attacks. Pictured
from left to right Shin Hirata, Katsuya
    Takahahi, and Naoko Kikuchi

5
Organizational Failure?
  • With the immediate targeting of Aum and its
assets, its founder and leader, Shoko Asahara was
arrested. The groups usage of kidnappings,
    brainwashing, and intimidation were techniques
that left a lasting impression on both the former
cult members and the Japanese population.
  • The organization however is experiencing a
resurgence. With their Guru awaiting execution
followers still pray toward the direction of the
facility which holds him. At this time, Japanese
police do not consider Aum to be an immediate
and obvious threat to public safety. Only time
will tell if this is a poor error in judgment.
