11
The Importance of Transatlantic Relations
Transatlantic relations
Globalization and market consolidation are
having a fundamental impact on traditional
business approaches and corporate structures.
Micro-economic factors such as the investment
location can become a critical force to achieve
sustainable competitive advantage, driving
economic performance and, ultimately, economic
survival.
12
Transatlantic Relations
The US and Germany
  • Germany is the most important trading partner for
    the US in Europe
  • Germany receives the largest amount of American
    investment in Europe
  • Over 2000 US companies are located in Germany
  • However, bilateral relations have to be seen in
    the European context

There is not too much America in our
partnership, but too little Europe.German
Chancelor Gerhard Schroeder, speaking at AmChams
100th Anniversary Celebrations
13
American Chamber of Commerce in Germany
  • AmCham in Germany
  • Represents business interests of 3000 US /
    German companies
  • Represents 85 of the entire investment of US
businesses in Germany, accounting for 800,000
direct jobs and over 100 billion in investment
  • AmCham Germany is the oldest and largest Chamber
of Commerce in Europe celebrated its 100th
    anniversary in 2003
  • Hosts many local events (dinners, luncheons, etc)
    with high-profilespeakers (CEOs)
  • Sponsors seminars, workshops and conferences
  • Provides networking opportunitiesat each level
(e.g. Business After Hours for young
    executives)

14
American Chamber of Commerce in Germany
  • AmChams Mission - to strengthen and expand the
    US/German trade relationship, supporting
unrestricted trade and investment as well as a
healthy, open and productive business climate
  • to actively address the individual needs of its
    members, providing tailored services
    (lobbying, providing information, assisting in
    investment decisions)
  • to stay in constant contact with business
    leaders and political decision-makers in
    Berlin, Brussels and Washington DC,
pro-actively shaping policies on both sides of
    the Atlantic

15
The Future?
We need to continue to break down trade barriers
and enhance cultural understanding, for further
investment of large, medium-sized and smaller
companies in Europe and Germany, as well as in
the US.

The Opportunity for Women
How can women take advantage of these changing
conditions, to redefine traditional management
practices and help maximize the value and
potential of their company?
  • By
  • Relying on their strengths. Skills typically
    associated with women (creativity,
    multi-tasking,flexibility, co-operation etc.)
  • are in demand more than ever before !

19
The War For Talent
A fundamental part of every companys success
strategy is to be able to attract and retain the
best people, to put in place the next generation
of leaders.
More companies are (finally) accepting - and
acting on - the realization that women are an
equal part of the talent pool. As a result,
many initiatives are emerging to promote women
into leadership roles, creating a women-friendly
environment, mentoring-programs, innovative
career paths, etc.
20
The Statistics Today
Although women account for almost half of the
executive, administrative and managerial
occupations, they account for less than 3-5 of
top executive positions. (Surveys of 1500
companies conducted by Korn/Ferry International
and Catalyst over the last decades.)

Q A
26
The Glass Ceiling Myth or Reality?
In business, women have to be three times
as good as men, in order to succeed
27
Luckily, that is not so difficult
?
28
Barriers to Breaking the Glass Ceiling
The Glass Ceiling - Myth or Reality?
Barriers continue to include
  • Long hours culture
  • Education gap (especially in technical and
    financial areas)
  • Lack of mentor / sponsor
  • Stereotypes / preconceptions
  • Family responsibilities

29
Barriers to Breaking the Glass Ceiling
The Glass Ceiling - Myth or Reality?
But the good news is
  • The old dogs (that couldnt be taught new
    tricks) are retiring!
  • Better education Women are getting more
    confident, pursuing graduate degrees and
venturing into the areas of technology and
    numbers
  • Better communication Women have learned / are
    learning to communicate persuasively
  • Female role models (CEOs Carly Fiorina, Anita
Roddick, Meg Whitman, Martha Stewart, Christine
Licci) are paving the way for an overall
    different male perception)
  • More confidence Women have started to rely on
their corporate strengths, smartly handling the
    politics of an organization
  • Domestic responsibilities tend to be more equally
    divided
  • Discrimination Laws have been tightened in most
    Western cultures

30
Barriers to Breaking the Glass Ceiling
The Glass Ceiling - Myth or Reality?
Therefore, the notion of a Glass Ceiling
  • has become less important, though it still
    exists,
  • is very distracting and thus harmful to your
    performance,
  • can easily serve as an excuse,
  • dilutes your perception of real strengths and
    weaknesses
  • ? Be aware of what is going on, but dont be
obsessed or afraid. Instead, be creative.
