French Colonies in North America
  • Originally limited to fishing colonies in the
    Grand Banks off Newfoundland
  • Gradually started to move inland when interest in
    fur trading began to grow
  • 1603- Samuel Champlain explores the region and
    creates New France
  • 1663- Louis XIV declares it a royal colony. Has
    3000 people by 1666, 15000 by 1689 and 85000 by
1754, making it larger than all 13 British
    colonies

France most south, England moves west
  • France begins to creep down towards the
Mississippi River near present day Chicago (with
    help from Joliet and Marquette)
  • La Salle and Cavelier travel down the Mississippi
River and create Louisiane and establish New
    Orleans
  • English encroachment west towards the
Appalachians (among other things) leads to the
French Indian War (a splinter from the Seven
    Years War in Europe)

5
English take Canada
  • Battle of Quebec (1759) (AKA Plains of Abraham)
  • Montcalm (Fr) v. Wolfe (Eng)
  • After a three month siege of Quebec, the two
nations battle for an hour. Wolfe died in the
battle and Montcalm died the next day. In the end
French forces in Canada came under more English
pressure. By 1763, France ceded Canada to
England. The French cede Louisiana to both
England and Spain the same year.

  • Following the French defeat in the French and
Indian War, the Treaty of Paris of February 10,
1763, divided French territory on the North
American continent between the British and the
Spanish. The sole exception was the islands of
Saint Pierre and Miquelon off the Canadian coast,
retained as a fishing outpost the only remaining
French possessions north of the Caribbean.
