Summary of the project
  • This semester in Curriculum class we have
discussed many issues, including those dealing
with Healthy People 2010 and getting children and
    adults more active.
  • The purpose of this class project was to
    investigate what opportunities for physical
activity exist in our community and surrounding
areas- for children and senior citizens alike.

103
Conclusions for the project
  • Brookings has a wide variety of activities from
which to select, if a resident wants to be
    physically active.
  • These activities range from those requiring
little or no equipment and no fees, to those
    requiring equipment and high fees.
  • Although activities for very young children and
senior adults are limited, they do exist.
  • The majority of activities available center on
    those who are ages 10-adult.

104
Concluding Observations
  • Income based assistance is available for
participation in the Park and Recreation programs
in Brookings. It is available through Interlakes
    Community Action (692-6391). A voucher worth 22
to be used towards Park and Rec activities can be
obtained provided the applicants meet certain
    criteria for eligibility.

105
Concluding Observations continued
  • Not a lot is being done to accommodate
individuals with special needs in the various
activities that are offered. That would be a good
focus for the community to be able to involve
    those individuals in physical activity.
  • Many of the activities are competitive
activities. There may need to be a better balance
    between competitive an non-competitive activities.
