    for more money

3
Theme of Story
  • Esperanza was mad because of where they lived
after the fire. They had to move to America.
They had to live in a broken down house. Soon,
Esperanza learned and understood why they where
there and why they where living in those
    conditions.

4
Plot of Story
  • Esperanzas mom got sick from the dust storm.
  • Esperanzas dad died because of bandits.
  • Esperanzas uncles burned there house down with
    them in it.
  • Esperanzas camp went on strike.
  • Abuelita broke her ankle in the fire so, she
couldnt go to America with Esperanza.

5
Description of Setting
  • In Mexico Esperanzas house was big and
surrounded by the woods. Vine yards around their
house. Vines draped down on trees with grapes
very ripe. When the sunset it was very relaxing.
  • In America In Cabins not so nice just a little
dirty. Cabins were right next to each other.
Bad dust storms would roll in and cover every
thing, not exactly what you call home. Hot and
    dry not most.

6
The 3 Characters
  • Esperanza she is brave, miss understood,
loyal, kind, and outgoing. Esperanzas dad
died a day before her birthday and she also had
    to move to America.
  • Mama Mama is a woman that does everything in
her power to let her daughter have
a great life she is also loyal and brave. Mama
got sick from a sand storm and got pneumonia.
  • Miguel Miguel is a servant for Esperanzas
family. That doesnt stop him though. They
treat him very well . He is also very kind,
misunderstood, hard working. When they where in
America the people that owned the repair shop for
cars and wouldnt let him work there because he
    was a Mexican.

7
Words I Didnt Know
  • Extravagant Esperanza continued, reliving the
extravagant moments, but was relieved when she
knew that Isabel was asleep. I think extravagant
means amazing and heart filing. Extravagant
    means strange and curios.
  • Strewn Her uncles papers were strewn across
the desk. I think strewn means scattered or laid
out. Strewn means to spread by scattering.
  • Pretentious But he could build another house,
bigger and pretentious anywhere on the
property, Said Mama. I think pretentious
means paying for something. Pretentious means
    making unusually unjustified or executive
    claims.
  • Menacing When Esperanza saw their menacing
faces, she wanted to run back to the safety of
the camp, do laundry, clean diapers, anything but
this. I think it means to be mean or horrifying.
Menacing means to make a show intention to harm.
  • Phony She gave her a phony smile and said,
!Entiendes! understand. I think it means ugly
or weird. Phony means to intend to mislead or
    receive.
