The Gatling Gun was patented in 1862.

In 1865, The Gatling Gun was tested at Fort
Monroe, virginia. This gun fired 350 rounds a
minute.

The Gatling Gun was used briefly toward the end
of the Civil War.

By the time The Gatling Gun was ready for use,
the civil war was almost over, So the gun did not
have much impact on the war. Major General
Benjamin Butler used two around
Petersburg,Virginia and eight on gunboats.
Lieutenant Colonel Horace Porter acquired one and
Major General Winfield Scott Hancock ordered
twelve for his I Corps. All three men were union
officers. the BATTLE did test the gatling gun
which was probably the first successful true
machine gun used in warfare.

After the War the U.S. adopted the Gatling Gun.
