16
  • Who are you sending it to, a
    human resource office, or a
  • decision-maker?
  • If its in response to a published job opening,
where applicants are screened by HR, use a
functional resume which clearly shows why you are
    qualified for the job.

17
  • When your resume is going to a human resource
office, it must be no more than one page and
clearly present that you are qualified. On the
average, an HR representative spends 20 seconds
    scanning your resume.

18
  • If you are applying for a teaching job in higher
    education, use a Curriculum Vita.
  • However, if you are going to work in Higher Ed
but not teach, use a functional resume.

19
  • If you are sending it to a decision-maker, what
type of person is he/she looking for?
  • If you dont have a way to find out,
what type of industry are they in
    For-Profit, Government,
    Non-Profit International,
    Small Business, etc.?

20
  • Are they a For-Profit company who is looking for
    a hot-shot, fast-paced employee who can really
produce? Send them an Achievement style resume.
  • Are they a Non-Profit or government agency
looking for someone who cares about people and
doesnt expect a lot of money? You need a Reverse
    Chronological resume.

21
  • Are they looking for someone who has experience
in the field and wont need much training? Use a
    Reverse Chronological Resume.
  • Are they from a government agency who is looking
for some one very dependable who will get the
job done? Demonstrate that dependability in a
    Reverse Chronological resume.

22
  • Base all decisions about your resume
on the preferences of the audience
    who will read it.

23
  • Getting a job is sales. You are the
  • salesperson of this product.
  • Your resume and cover letter are your
    marketing.
  • You must focus your marketing on the needs of
    the buyers.

24
  • What do you have to sell?
  • What are your relevant skills,
    abilities, and knowledge?
  • What does the employer
    need you to do?
  • (Dont know? Go to the Occupational Information
Network web site and look up the tasks of the
    job)

25
  • Resume Writing Guidelines
  • If the information is important to the employer,
it belongs on your resume. If not, remove it.
  • Place information on a resume in order of its
    importance to the employer.
  • You must be honest, but not exact or detailed.
  • There is no right way to write a resume you
    decide what is best.
  • You will know how effective it is by the number
    of interviews you receive.

26
  • Objectives An objective is a key part of a
resume. It must communicate to the reader at
least three of the following aspects
  • The job you want,
  • The industry,
  • What you want to do,
  • The key required skills.

27
  • Objective An entry level position in healthcare
marketing and communication utilizing my skills
    in desk-top publishing, graphic arts,
    advertising, and product promotions.
  • Objective A position as a Field Engineer in
    residential construction building Design Build
    homes.
  • Objective A position as an Auditor for a major
national hotel chain using my skills in data
    analysis, financial/information systems, and tax
    law compliance.

28
  • On putting references on a resume or attaching
    them.
  • Your goal is to get the employer to contact you
    about an interview.
  • When you automatically provide references, they
dont have to talk to you to get them.

29
  • Wait until after you have been interviewed to
provide references so that you can prepare them
for the call by telling them
  • Who will be calling
  • About the position
  • Why you are qualified
  • What you want them to say
    about you

30
  • Why should you run the risk of getting an
unintentional bad reference because you couldnt
    prepare your contact effectively?
  • Whenever possible, wait until an employer asks
you for references to provide them.

31
  • SCANNABLE RESUMES
  • A scannable resume is required by a few companies
who use a computerized scanning system (like
Resumex) to review your resume beforehand. If
you are applying for a published job opening,
call the HR office and ask if they require a
    scannable resume.

32
  • A scannable resume is not an additional resume
style, it is a different way of formatting your
existing resume. If you run into an employer who
requires that you provide a scannable resume
  • Download from our website www.ecu.edu/e3careers
our handout on making your resume scannable.

  • The difference between the right word and the
almost right word is the difference between
    lightening and a lightening bug.
