2Control Ticks Before They get a hold of You
- Did you know that there are 80 different species
of ticks in the US alone? - And they can transmit viral and bacterial
diseases including encephalitis and Lyme disease.
3Tick Bites
- Everyone has a different reaction to a tick bite.
In most cases, you'll simply end up with an itchy
insect bite, but in severe cases, you could end
up quite ill. In animals, serious tick
infestations could cause anemia and weight loss.
In some very rare cases, it can cause death
because of extensive blood loss.
4Three Main types of Ticks
While there are 80 different species, most people
encounter one of three different species. The
black legged (or deer) tick is fairly common.
These are the type that cause Lyme disease. The
American dog tick is also relatively common. It
can cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The other
type of tick you may see is the brown dog tick.
They can't transmit diseases to humans, but they
can transmit diseases to dogs.
5Ticks 101
- Mating In most cases, mating has to occur on the
host because the male tick requires a little
snack before he mates. This, however, is not the
case with deer ticks. - Eating Ticks eat only the blood of warm blooded
animals and humans. Females are much slower than
males, eating on one host for a number of days.
Once engorged, they lay their eggs then die.
Hungry ticks can live for up to two years, in
some cases, without eating. - Habitats Most types of ticks hide in grassy or
wooded areas. Brown dog ticks, however, are
indoor creatures, hiding in furniture, behind
baseboards, and even under the edges of rugs.
6'Tis the Season
- As with many other insects, ticks are quite
seasonal. If the spring is a fairly warm one, you
can bet that these little pests will develop
quickly. Adult deer ticks can come out even in
the snow if the temperature is above 40 degrees.
If you live in an area where ticks are common,
begin watching the weather early to start
prevention measures.
