• Joined 18th British Army Mounted Rifles
• London Zoo held a dedication ceremony
• Retired from military April 15, 1959
• Retired as Veterinary Doctor on Sept. 24, 1947

How Winnie came to be

• Harry got off train in White River to look around
• Saw hunter cradling a bear cub in his arms
• A hunter killed cubs mother
• Harry bought bear for 20 from hunter
• He named bear Winnie after hometown, Winnipeg

• While on his way to war, he gave Winnie to
  London Zoo
• Winnie died on May 12, 1934
