Realistic Fiction

• Takes place in present day times.
• Locations and characters are realistic.
• Based on invented characters in realistic
  situations.
  
• Plot could happen, however it is made up by the
  author.

• Setting is during a historical time period
• Made up story, based on real people or events
• Realistic historical details
• Dear America The Boy in The Striped Pajamas

Mystery

• Presents a problem that has to be solved
• Gives clues or red herrings
• Has a detective and a culprit
• Example Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew series.

Science Fiction

• Includes events that might happen based on
  scientific facts. (experiments)
  
• Setting is often in the future or somewhere other
  than Earth.
  
• Presents a problem that is solved using
  scientific facts or reasoning.
  
• Example Star Wars
