    the Axis during 1942
  • explain how the Allies defeated Germany and Italy

5
Objectives
  • Describe the impact of World War II on the U.S.
economy and on women, Japanese Americans, and
    other minority groups
  • describe Allied advances on Japan in the Pacific

6
Objectives

    atomic bomb
  • describe the political and social effects of
    World War II

7
Activity one
  • The students will create an illustrated scrapbook
of World War II. Students may focus on such
topics as war technology, changes in the United
States as a result of the war, or its effect on
American foreign policy. They will be able to
use photographs, art, literature, movies , and
    music of the war period.

8
Activity two
  • On the computers the students will work in pairs
and play the game The European Theatre. The
Nazis are taking over Europe and the Allied
forces must find a way to stop them. Students
    made decisions regarding troop movement,
weaponry, and joining forces with other nations.
The students will write a page describing how
    their war ended.

9
Activity three
  • As a class we will watch the video D-Day, a film
that tells of the Allies military build-up,
strategies leading to D-Day, and the Allied
invasion of Europe. We will then discuss the
outcome of it and tell how each would have done
    things differently if possible.

10
Activity four
  • The students will read the book, Diary of a Young
Girl, Anne Frank. It is a book about a Jewish
girl who survived the concentration camp. The
students will then write a two page report on
    what they think of it

11
Activity five
  • After watching the video, The Home Front, a film
that depicts the social changes that the U.S.
went through during the war, including the effect
on family life, the beginning of the civil
rights movement, and the growth of the American
Economy, they will get into groups and write a
page on what was the most important in their
    minds.

12
Activity six
  • As a class we will discuss what daily life must
have been like for civilians in Stalingrad,
Leningrad, and for soldiers fighting in the
Pacific. They students will write in their
notebooks a short-story or diary entry describing
    on such person

13
Activity seven
  • In groups the students will create a balance
sheet illustrating the good and bad effects of
the war on the U.S. economy. Then they will
present their ideas to the class.

14
Activity eight
  • As a class we will discuss the issue of civic
responsibility to daily life. On a sheet of
paper they will write how their lives might be
    different if it were 1943.

15
Activity nine
  • We will discuss the ethics of total war. The
students will recall the Battle of Britain and
subsequent Allied bombing of German cities, such
as Dresden. Then they will be divided into two
groups and debate whether the horror of war
    escalates in proportion to technology.

16
Activity ten
  • As a class we will discuss how might the U.S.
have believed that use of the atomic bomb would
affect its relations with the Soviet Union in the
post war. Then in their notebooks they will
answer this question, do you think the U.S.
should have dropped the bomb on Japan? Why or Why
    not?
