GATEWAYS AND PORTALSMOST SUCCESSFUL AND
EFFECTIVE INTERNET SERVICE MODELS

• The famous Yahoo, AOL, MSN, Excite,
  Crawl web sites are generally gateways and
  portals. Gateways and Portals are in fact a kind
  of web site or web service. It offers patrons a
  series of abundant information resources and
  services, such as e-mail, forum, search engine,
  online trade, news broadcast. With the
  development, its service is enriched, up to now,
  not only is it a search engine, but also it has
  various functions.

• All the successful gateways and portals
  pursue the perfection in following 6 aspects
• (1)Connectivity helps users to connect
  to the Internet
• (2)Information organization Based on
  the organization and classification to the
  searched information, build the efficient
  navigation system
• (3)Content collects rich valuable
  information
• (4)Communications provides services as
  e-mail, chat-room for people to communicate
• (5)Commerce trade on Internet is a
  tendency, most of web portals now offer online
  purchase, online auction and enterprise golden
  page
• (6) Community creates and maintains
  Internet Community. IC can attract large amount
  of users to stay on the portals.

• On the whole, the gateways and portals are
  web sites, which are integration of rich contents
  and functions and offer a variety of Internet
  information services to online patrons. There are
  two kinds of gateways and portals horizontal and
  vertical. The former, Yahoo for example, includes
  comprehensive information and the latter is
  specific subject oriented, like the STIPScience
  and Technology Information Portal planned by my
  institute. Gateways and Portals are up to now
  most successful and effective Internet service
  models.

GLOBAL INFORMATION RESOURCES

• Information becomes most active and dominant
  factor affecting the industry production,
  sci-tech innovation and social economy. Humans
  are experiencing the transition from a printed
  paper world to an electronic, networking and
  digital era. However, the conflict between
  information search and the astronomical amount of
  disorganized, distributed, diversified, expanding
  information online becomes acute. The efficient
  channels must be found to solve the contradiction
  With the fast speed development of computer
  network, high-density data storage, communication
  and multi-medium technology the construction of
  DL become possible and impending. The technology
  of gateways and portals can be exploited in the
  construction of DL, and the DL will be the
  gateways and portals to the global information
  and the enlightened world.

VARIOUS EXPRESSIONS OF DL FORMS ITS DEFINITION

• There are a variety of approximate
  expressions of DL, such as virtual library, no
  wall library, electronic library (EL), desktop
  library, on-site library, invisible library.
  Although there isn't a uniform definition of DL,
  each represents and accentuates an aspect of DL
  and they combine to form the DL's feature and is
  the integrated solution for the online users who
  deplore before the gigantic amount of chaotic
  information.

• We can generalize the definition of DL
  as following
• (1) After collecting, organizing,
  standardizing and reprocessing the multi-medium
  information such as valuable images, texts,
  phonics, audio, video, visual, software and
  scientific data, store and management them in
  high quality in order to amplify and multiply
  their value
• (2) Offer the fast, convenient
  electronic access to the transactional
  trans-database, trans-time and trans-space
  services on the computer network.

• ?The versatility of information
  resources
• ? Most conveniently to obtain the
  required information

The GOALS OF DL AND IT'S FRAME

• The goals of DL
• (1) Conversion of printed material to
  digital form
• (2) Universal access to worldwide
  information resources
• (3) Distributed Management of Information
  Resources.
• DL is an open, interconnected
  complicated system involving sophisticated
  technology in library, information, computer,
  humanities and intelligence sciences.

• (5) The information retrieval

SEVERAL PROJECTS RELATED TO OR ON THE DL
UNDERTAKING IN CHINA FORBODE ITS BRIGHT FUTURE

• (1) "863" Chinese digital library
  planning
• As an active response to the
  international DL construction it was set up in
  1998, Granted by Sci-Tech Ministry of China.
  Co-operated by Cultural Ministry, Broadcasting
  and Television Ministry, Information Industry
  Ministry, etc. Based on the achievements of
  software and hardware accumulated in past 10-20
  years, it aims at integrating current information
  technology, communication equipment and personnel
  resources to trace and solve the key technology
  of CDL. It also plan to create related law
  environment, construct CDL paradigm engineering,
  build complete technical standard, thus promoting
  the practice of CDL, directing it to develop
  toward industry and forming the self-reliance
  hardware and software products.

• (2) China Academic Library
  Information System
• One of the most important projects of
  211 projects. It is a Library Coalition of
  Universities of China. Based on the wide area
  web, it is a hierarchical, multilateral
  documentation, computer software and hardware,
  personnel resources sharing system. Its public
  service software system consists of online
  co-catalogue system, self-building database
  system, OPAC system and interlibrary loan system.
  It has been put into use and is in its second
  development period.

• (3) The Virtual National Sci-Tech
  Books Documentation Center (NSTBDC)
• It was established in June 12th,
  2000. Announced by National Sci-Tech Ministry of
  China. Co-operated by several ministries and
  important documentation and information
  institutes in science, engineering, agriculture
  and medical sciences. According to the national
  development, it takes charges of collecting the
  Sci-Tech documentation information resources
  and processing them by using advanced information
  technology for serving the national patrons.

• (4) Chinese Digital Library System
  Engineering
• It Was granted by Sci-Tech Ministry in
  1999. Based on succeed experimental research of
  DL model in 1998 by Chinese National Library, the
  Chinese Digital Library System Engineering
  Coalition Meeting was hold and the Chinese DL
  Lit. Cop. was set up. All these marked the
  initiation of CDL system engineering.

Conclusion

• Most people familiar with the definition and the
  goals of digital library but they don't know how
  to implement it.
• China is a large country, there are many
  organizations, systems, so it is very complicated
  to build a one integrated system.
