superpower.
- in 1949 the united state had dropped two atomic
bombs on Japan to end world war two. - Four years later,The Soviet union built their own
atomic bomb. - A deadly arms race had begun . Both superpowers
stockpiled nuclear weapon. By the end of the
decade,both sides were developing missiles to
carry bombs to each other 's doorsteps.

- neither superpowers wanted to rick an all-out
instead,they pursued their rivalry indirectly by
supporting opposite sides in conflict in the
third world. These were the poorer nation of
Latin America, Asia and Africa. - One such conflict brought the supper powers to
the brink of war. - In 1962, President John F. Kennedy learned that
the soviets were supplying Cuba with missiles.
U.S navy ships blocked the island. The world
waited to see if the soviet union would remove
all missiles and missiles bases from Cuba. - Finally,the soviet Union agreed to remove them.

- Space Race was a competition of space exploration
between the United State and Soviet Union, which
lasted roughly from 1957 to 1975.It involved the
efforts to explore outer space with artificial
satellites, to send humans into space, and to
land people on the Moon. - By 1960 the superpowers were in a space race as
well as an arms race. Americans were stunned in
1957 when the Soviet sent Sputnik, a man-made
satellite,into orbit around the earth. - Throughout the 1960s,the two nations raced to see
who would be first to put a person on the moon.

- The soviet union was a strong socialist republic.
- The united state was strong capitalist republic.
- The soviet union and the united state were in the
same side during world war 2. - The united state want all county to be democratic
and the soviet union want all country to be
communist - Both countries ware powerful.
- The soviet wear the world largest stockpile of
nuclear weapon for the second half of the civil
war ,and the U.S.A was the largest army in the
world, and one of the two most powerful air
forces in the world. - The soviet were unequal led global intelligence
network (KG B), the U.S.A were powerful allies in
Western Europe (NATO).

significant toward the space race.
- Sputnik, the first man-made satellite, was
launched on October 4, 1957 by the U.S.S.R. It
was little more than the size of a basketball and
weighed 184 pounds. Sputnik was not equipped
with any scientific instruments, but orbited the
earth once every 98 minutes. It contained a
single radio transmitter.

- Forty years later, the Cold War is over, and the
Russian space program frightens only its own
cosmonauts. - That launch ushered in new political, military,
technological, and scientific developments. While
the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked
