  • Model United Nations team competed in Beijing,
    China
  • Spelman student receives Outstanding Delegate
    award
  • Spelbots again qualify for the International
    RoboCup and will compete in Bremen, Germany in
    June (competed against Brown University at the US
    Open in May and tied 1-1)
  • 2006 Spelman College Honda Campus All-Star
    Challenge team made it to the playoffs for the
    first time in seven years
  • Mock Trial team competed in the regional and
    national competition took 2nd place in the
    Southeastern Regional competition
  • Spelman College Dance Theater won the Southeast
    Regional Competition of the American College
    Dance Festival and will compete at the Nationals,
    performing at the Kennedy Center on May 17

  • Cosby Chair (Social Science) Patricia McFaddens
    Global Feminism lectures and symposium
  • Biology Department curricular revision (supported
    by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute) featuring
    a cluster of four introductory courses, organized
    around the principles of reading science,
    talking science, writing science, and doing
    science.
  • Spelman College Education Scholars Team, led by
    Dr. Karen Donaldson, focusing on Closing the
    Achievement Gap The Spelman Way, title of their
    forthcoming textbook and theme for comparative

  • Restructuring of the Spelman Student Government
    Association with support of Ms. Sheena Glover,
    Director of Student Activities
  • Mediation training and conflict management
    certification led by Interim Dean of Students
    Teresa Johnson Ramey
  • Public Safety Departments POSSE peer education
    program expanded to 35 students (record number of
    participants) and participated in emergency
    preparedness training at Morehouse School of
    Medicine
  • Spelman hosted several local and regional
    meetings e.g., Math Sciences Research Institute
    Workshop on Modern Mathematics, Minority
    Opportunities in Research (MORE)/National
    Institute of General Medical Sciences/National
    Institute of Health Regional Meeting, Boeing

  • Concluded the land swap with the Atlanta Housing
    Authority (acquiring more land adjacent to
    Spelman College, along Lee Street and Westview)
  • Took occupancy of the Milligan Building and
    surrounding property
  • New 300-bed residence hall planning complete
    construction to begin in Fall 2006 on lot behind
    the Milligan building
  • Student Development staff traveled to visit
    innovative residential life programs in
    anticipation of the new residence hall

  • All academic buildings are now wireless (Fine
    Arts building technology upgrades in progress)
  • Upgraded hardware in student labs
  • Installed software to protect our systems from
    viruses on student machines
  • More SmartBoards installed in Cosby Building
  • Upgraded to most current version of Lotus Notes
    with minimal disruption to campus users

  • Spelman Institutional Review Board (IRB) obtained
    a Federal Assurance Number from the Health and
    Human Services Office for Human Research
    Protection, making Spelman faculty eligible to
    apply for federal grant funds for research
    involving human participants
  • Community outreach efforts through the Office of
    Continuing Education
  • Project Nobility at Brown Middle School
  • Education and training for Head Start teachers
  • Training for troubled youth - City of Atlanta
    Weed and Seed Program
  • Early College Program and Pre-Collegiate
    Prep Program
  • NSF funded grant for Middle School Computer Camp
    and HBCU Robotics Project
  • Student Health Services awarded major grant
    funding to develop interventions for students at
    risk for Type II diabetes

  • Nearly 500 million media impressions between
    May-December 2005
  • Highlights include Women of Color Leadership
    Conference, Spelman College Museum of Fine Arts
    (two successful exhibits), Faculty Interviews,
    Student Interviews, and Presidential Interviews
  • Spelbots garnered more than 237 million media
    impressions with coverage on CNN, CBS News, ABC
    News, Ebony, and NPR
  • Hip Hop Week (November 2005) garnered 115 million
    media impressions and five consecutive days of
    major coverage in AJC

  • Dr. Sanjay Gupta (CNN) launched his Fit Nation
    campaign at Spelman College Brenda Dalton
    featured on House Calls discussing obesity and
    diabetes on college campuses
  • Spelman Tennis Team wins Great South Athletic
    Conference Title (our first championship title in
    NCAA Division III)
  • Glee Club and Jazz Ensemble Spring Tours
    including Brown University, Shenandoah
    University, Schomberg Center for Research and
    Black Culture
  • Glee Club participation with Atlanta Symphony in
    a King Celebration Concert on NPR and
    participation in Coretta Scott King Memorial and
    Funeral Services
  • Glee Club Reunion Concert (100 returning members)
  • Organ Concert Series including recital by Dr.
    Joyce Johnson

  • Institutional response to many students impacted
    by Hurricane Katrina (Admissions staff counseled
    more than 400 displaced students immediately
    after the disaster campus welcomed 41 guest
    students in the fall semester)
  • Reorganization of Physical Plant as Facilities
    Management Services under the leadership of Art
    Frazier using technology to process work
    orders, notify campus constituents, and reduce
    wait time
  • Enhanced use of technology in Administrative
    Services, under the leadership of Jackie James,
    to track and reduce time to process requisitions,
    and improve purchasing and delivery of research
    supplies and equipment
  • New partnership with the US Postal Service to
    enhance access to important mail services on
    campus and creation of Spelman Postage Stamp
    (soon to be available at stamps.com)
  • Switchboard changes to improve service to
    internal and external callers

  • Dr. Turner conducted series of Community Chats
    with student focus groups to assess needs and
    implemented changes when possible (i.e., longer
    hours in the dining hall, reduced dining cost for
    commuter students, improved funding for resident
    assistants)
  • Addition of a trained staff person to the Help
    Desk to offer higher level tech support
  • Implementation of Human Resources Web for
    Employees
  • Sponsored Programs implemented an online grant
    proposal routing and approval process
  • Plan developed by Steve Bowser, faculty and key
    administrators to increase monitored students
    after hours use of classroom, lab, practice and
    studio spaces to be implemented in Fall 2006
  • 3rd Annual Exemplary Customer Service Awards
