Title: Still Life

1
Still Life
Henri Matisse Cut Paper- Create a cut paper
composition depicting plant and animal life.
Choose real plants and animals to work from to
create this colorful cut paper project.
2
Portraits
Albrect Durer Pencil- Depict yourself in a
family crest, you can research the symbols
associated with your last name or you can make up
your own emblems and symbols to create a crest.
Pay attention to how Durer incorporates the
portrait with his initials and the symbols all
around.
3
Sculpture
Asian Carving Soap- Using subtractive or
reductive methods you should carve a small
sculpture of an animal out of a bar of soap. This
project focuses on learning to carefully carve
out shapes and add the details needed to
stylistically depict your animal.
4
Figures
Pablo Picasso Acrylic - Using only one tonal
value like Picasso did during his blue period you
should depict figures with expressions that
reflect the color you have chosen. All shading,
highlights and tones need to be mixed with your
chosen color to create a monochrome image.
5
Scapes
Louis Sullivan Watercolor- Depict a large scale
building like you would find in a downtown area
with strong linear elements and lots of window
and detail shown. You will have to be very
controlled with the watercolors with in the
building but can be looser with the background of
sky and landscape.
6
Design
Andy Goldsworthy Color Pencil - Create an ariel
view of a maze. Pay close attention to the
shadows that would be created if the maze was
actually built into the landscape as artist Andy
Goldsworthy does with his earthwork sculptures.
7
Still Life
Rene MagritteColor Pencil- Depict a set of still
lives that do not usually fit together. These
various objects should be shown with differing
scale to create a surrealistic image like the
work of Magritte. Scale and composition should be
the focus of this project.
8
Portraits
Rembrandt van RijnCharcoal/Pencil- Depict a
self-portrait in which you have a distinct
expression on your face. Try to avoid the
straight on view, also try to use a combination
of photographs and mirrors when creating your
work.
9
Sculpture
Meso-American Figures Clay- Using the pinch pot
and slab methods you will create a hollow figure
with an exaggerated or stylized body style. The
body style should reflect the pinch pot/slab
method and yet it should still be image
three-dimensional. The figure should able to
stand on its own.
10
Figures
Francisco Goya Pencil- Depict a sporting scene
where animals and humans work together. Consider
sports such as rodeo or bull fighting. This
action scene should be depicted with realism and
accutate proportions for both man and animal.
11
Scapes
Piet Mondrian Paint- Depict an ariel grid like
scene of city or landscape. The lines should
depict streets or crop lines. This image should
be very colorful and bold like the work of
Mondrian. You will need to bring to class a map
(like you can get to on google maps etc.) you
will not be able to print in class you must bring
this in, it will be part of your grade.
12
Design
Elsworth Kelly Acrylic Painting - Using
geometric shapes and line designs mix and blend
colors to create the full spectrum of the color
wheel, take care to ensure your lines are crisp
and clean. You may only use primary colors to mix
with.
13
Still Life
Claes Oldenburg Watercolor/Ink- Depict a still
life object at an extremely large scale and
placed in a land/cityscape much like the
real-life pop art sculptures of Oldenburg. Your
images should appear comical in nature and grand
in scale.
14
Portraits
Andy Warhol Ink - Using color paper and black
india ink create a portrait of either yourself or
a classmate. The color paper will serve as the
skin tone and the shading, background, and shapes
of the face are created using ink.
15
Sculpture
Aboriginal Walking Sticks -Wood Paint Create
an aboriginal walking stick using a large stick
you bring in from home, you will then paint it
with a repeated dot pattern to create an animal
design like the traditional sticks.
16
Figures
Jan Van Eyck Color Pencil- Depict a figure in
which a mirror is showing the back of the figure.
The mirror image may be slightly distorted
depending on the type of mirror you use to
reflect the back of the scene.
17
Scapes
Harry Callahan Photo-Collage - Begin by taking a
photograph of a landscape. You will need to bring
in two photocopies of the image in black and
white. Using a transfer method you should
transfer the images onto your paper just slightly
off register to create a double exposure type of
image. You can embellish this image or work on a
background watercolor wash.
18

image of animals in the style of M.C. Escher. You
should only use black and white to create a
strong positive negative effect.

still life object. Do this by first creating a
contour outline on wax paper, then cut out your

stencil out on your composition and paint a
fitting environment for your image. Your stencil
will create a negative space in your composition.

tone, you need to create at least three of these
panels.
25

portrait of some one who has a still life item
that explains what they do for a living or what
his/her interests or hobbies are.

Tibetan Statues Clay- Create a small figurine of
seated figure. This should be done in a stylized
way. To make sure this makes it through the kiln

paint the figures and then buff them with shoe
polish to create the antique look after they are
fired.
28

should then decorate your mask with a repetitive
pattern made of found items such as rice, corn,
