Timeline
  • 1992 Issuing of export licences was moved from
    the Department Trade Industry to the newly
    formed Department of National Heritage (NH).
  • 1997 NH was amalgamated to form the Department of
    Culture, Media Sport (DCMS).
  • 2005 Following a wide ranging review by Sir
    Nicholas Goodison, the issuing of export licences
    was transferred to the Museums, Libraries
    Archives council (MLA)

Department of Culture, Media Sport
  • DCMS is funded by HM Treasury following
    negotiation in the round. The department has 4
    Ministers.

The role of DCMS
  • DCMS is responsible for Government policy on the
    arts, sport, the National Lottery, tourism,
    libraries, museums and galleries, broadcasting,
    creative industries including film and the music
    industry, press freedom and regulation,
    licensing, gambling and the historic environment.
  • DCMS are also responsible for the listing of
    historic buildings and scheduling of ancient
    monuments, the management of the Government Art
    Collection and for the Royal Parks Agency.

Museums, Libraries Archives council (MLA)
  • MLA was launched in April 2000 as the strategic
    body working with and for museums, archives and
    libraries, tapping into the potential for
    collaboration between them.
  • Nine Regional Agencies
  • Annual budget of 46 million from DCMS
