2Rethinking Production
- Business leaders need to rethink the way they go
about doing business and production of their
products due to all the waste they produce. - Need to meet human needs with goods and services
that use fewer materials and are environmentally
safe. - By the time most human products have been
designed, 80 to 90 percent of the economic and
ecological costs they will generate over their
lifetimes have already become inevitable.
3Innovations and Solutions in Production
- Businesses that use resources efficiently and are
more environmentally safe are becoming more
profitable and are getting a head start on their
competitors. - Using new technology like LED lighting or lean
manufacturing can increase energy and material by
a factor of 4 to 10 -
- (i.e.) Chemical giant DuPont, which is committed
to sharp reductions of greenhouse gas emissions,
cut emissions 72 percent below 1991 levels by
2007 and saved 3 billion in the process. - Creating products and providing services through
such approaches as biomimcry (a study of natures
design).

6Challenges of Sustainable Lifestyles The issue
- Economic growth and some innovations have left
unsustainable stresses on the environment. - Global population is growing more and more every
year and demand is growing as well but resources
are becoming scarce. - Without new technological efficiencies and
changes to our daily lifestyles, new demands will
not be met.
7Challenges of Sustainable Lifestyles What can be
done.
- Resource efficiency will add more bang for the
buck and can improve by a factor of 10 or more
according to some experts. - The biggest efficiency that can done is by
reducing the amount that we consume - Governments must set policy so as to support an
infrastructure - of sustainability public transport, recycling,
energy efficiency services, and so on.
