• A Canadian passport is internationally accepted
  proof of ones Canadian citizenship. While
  travelling abroad it is recommendable to carry a
  passport which is valid 6 months ahead of the
  anticipated return date. Children, even if they
  are newborns cannot be listed on the parents
  passport and thus need to have their own
  passport.

• Depending on ones requirement one can apply for
  a Canadian passport. There are five kinds of
  passports issued by government of Canada. Regular
  passport in navy cover is issued for occasional
  travel purposes where as Temporary passport (in
  white cover) is issued on behalf of government to
  people when there is an urgent need of interim
  passport. The Emergency passport is a one page
  passport and thus can be used just once for
  direct return to Canada.

• The Special passport in green cover is issued to
  the government officials and bureaucrats where as
  the Diplomatic passport in maroon cover is
  provided to the diplomats and high ranking
  government officials.

• Canada passport application can be easily
  downloaded from the Passport Canada official
  website or one can also apply through Canada
  passport online facility. The fee for passport of
  a child who is less than 16 years old is 100 and
  that of an adult is 190. The payment for the
  Canada passport application can be made either
  through credit / debit card or cash or certified
  cheque or money order payable to the Receiver
  General of Canada. The normal processing time
  taken for issuing a Canadian passport is
  generally 20 days after the submission of
  complete form.

• Passports in Canada are generally issued for the
  period of five years for adults and 3 years for
  children aged below 3. There is no provision of
  extension in case of Canadian passport and one
  has to apply for a new passport 12 months before
  the expiry date. The documents required for the
  Canada passport application are original proof of
  Canadian citizenship, 2 photographs of the
  applicant duly signed by the guarantor and a
  valid identity proof.

• The identity proof might include provincial or
  territorial drivers licence or provincial or
  territorial non drivers licence or provincial or
  territorial health care card or other municipal,
  provincial, territorial or federal identification
  card. Proofs such as military identification
  card, old age security card and municipal,
  federal, territorial or provincial identification
  card may also be used for the application.

• Role of guarantor is also very significant for
  Canada passport application. To be eligible for
  the post of guarantor the person must have a
  Canadian passport which is valid or has expired
  not more than a year ago. The guarantor must also
  be acquainted with the applicant and must know
  her / him for at least two years. In case of
  children she / he must know the parents for at
  least two years. Only Canadian citizens whose age
  is 18 years or more are eligible to be a
  guarantor. The person should also be accessible
  to the passport Canada office when verification
  takes place.

• A guarantors passport is not considered
  legitimate if it is unreachable or damaged. It is
  also not considered valid if it is suspended or
  revoked or has been reportedly lost or stolen.
  In case if the passport has been returned or
  destroyed by Passport Canada then also it would
  not be considered legitimate.
