Definition
  • Panchkarma as the name suggests consists of five
    procedures which are following
  • Vaman (Emesis)
  • Virechan (Purgation)
  • Nasya (Putting oil in the nostrils)
  • Anuvasan Basti (Enema with oil)
  • Aasthapan Basti (Enema with decoction)
  • All the above procedures are meant for the
    purification
  • of body which in turn helps to get rid of several
    severe
  • and chronic diseases.

Poorva Karma
  • Snehan (Abhyangam) It means oil massage. It
    helps the toxins to move towards the
    gastro-intestinal tract. This treatment is very
    useful for obesity, loss of skin texture,
    sleeplessness, fatigue, other vata predominant
    diseases etc.
  • Swedan (Ayurvedic Medicated Steam Bath) This is
    a unique treatment procedure in which leaves of
    medicated plants are boiled resulting in steam
    that is passed to the box in which the patient is
    sitting. This treatment is helpful to eliminate
    impurities from the body, reducing fat and also
    helpful in some skin diseases.

Pradhan Karma
  • Vaman (Emesis) It is the procedure in which the
    patient/healthy individual is made to vomit with
    the help of herbal decoctions.
  • Prior to this patient/healthy individual is given
    ghrit to take for 3,5 or 7 days respectively for
    the sake of internal snehan and external snehan
    is also done in the form of abhyang along with
    swedan.
  • Vaman is given to those suffering from kapha
    dosha predominant diseases such as naveen jvar,
    atisaar, kushtha, prameh, unmaad, kaas, tamak
    shwas, hrullas, visarp, stanya vikar,
    oordhvajatrugat rog.

  • Virechan (Purgation) It is the procedure in
    which a patient/healthy individual is given
    purgatives to undergo motions. A patient might
    undergo 10 to 30 motions in a day.
  • Prior to this patient/healthy individual is given
    ghrit to take for 3,5 or 7 days respectively for
    the sake of internal snehan as in vaman.
  • It is used in pitta dosha predominant diseases
    such as gulma, arsha, vyanga, kamla, jeerna jvar,
    udar roga, chardi, kushtha, prameha, mootraghat,
    visarp, unmaad, kaas, shwas, krumi rog, vaatrakta

  • Nasya It is the procedure in which oil is put
    each nostril of the diseased/healthy individual.
  • Snehan and swedan of oordhvajatrugat part of the
    body is done prior to this procedure.
  • It is used to deal with oordhvajatrugat diseases
    such as headache, migraine, hair loss, graying of
    hair, weak eyesight, sinusitis.

  • Anuvasan Basti (Enema with oil) In this process
    enema is given to the patient with medicated oil.
  • For this procedure snehan swedan is done as
    poorva karma.
  • It is used in patients suffering from vata dosha
    predominant diseases such as gulma, anaah,
    arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries
    or any type of accidental injury, spondilosys
    (cervical and lumbar)

  • Aasthapan Basti In this process enema is given
    to the patient with herbal decoction.
  • For this procedure snehan swedan is done as
    poorva karma.
  • It is used in patients suffering from vata dosha
    predominant diseases such as gulma, anaah,
    arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries
    or any type of accidental injury, spondilosys
    (cervical and lumbar).
  • Anuvasan and aasthapan basti are given together
    in combination on alternate days. These are given
    in combination for 8,15 or 30 days depending on
    the condition of the disease.

Pashchat Karma
  • It consists of sansarjan kram i.e. diet programme
    for the period of one week.
  • Lifestyle correction according to the dosha
    sthiti and prakriti of an individual.
