ROARING LION EBOOK WRITING presents
BYTE ME !
2
BYTE ME WITH AN EBOOK!
DRAWING, WRITING in CYBER SPACE IS EBOOKING IT!
3
Whats it all about?????
Ebooks are just another kind of book. They are
electronic. They can be saved on a cd rom. They
are read from a computer screen or an ebook
reader. They are different in this way.
However, They still are in print, have pictures,
and Get an idea out there.
Last Updated October 14, 2009
4
Why not have an ebook ?
They save space. They save paper. They save
ink. They are shaped differently (cd rom) and
you do need An ebook reader or a computer to read
them.

However, EBOOKS can do a lot more than
paper-print books can do. They can have site
links, animations, and/or sound effects with the
story or text. Ebooks can highlight print, can
upgrade, can do whatever an ebook publisher
wants.
5
However, if a print copy is something you want
dearly, you can print a copy of a book from a cd.
Paper cracks and tears with age ebooks dont.

6
THINK Everything was hand-scripted before the
printing press was invented.
  • Think how might people then have thought about a
machine making books instead of the writer, or
the scribe, writing or copying books?

7
THINK The books of today, with front and back
covers and pages between, are just that the
books of today. The books of the future may well
come in many other forms. The ebook is just one.
8
What are the advantages of ebooking it?
  • Think I can reach across the world.

9
I can get writers and teachers and authors and
illustrators from everywhere to share their work
with me.
  • Example A fable from Persia came to me in such a
    manner.

10
This is it.
11
Yes, I have his permission to share his work with
everyone.
  • His story is fascinating.

12
Then he began to send me illustrations done by
Persian artists.
13
These are called Iranian miniature paintings.
  • Sometimes, he told me, an artist will take an
entire year to do one painting.

14
Now, I have many of these.
15
Art can be gained (as you have seen) via ebooking
it, or electronically.
  • So, too, can Music be gained in such a manner.

16
Music and art and writing are in many ways, alike.
  • All have a beginning, a middle, an end.
  • All tell a story, or give a message.
  • All are visual.

17
Yet, the word that is sung vs the written word
seems more able to experiment with various ways
to express itself.
  • The word that is printed is much more cautious.

18
CONSIDER HOW IT WAS THAT MUSIC HAS CHANGEDover
time IN ALL THE WAYS IT PRESENTS ITSELF.
  • First there was sound, and singing, then writing
    of the notes on paper.
  • Then there were instruments along with singing
    following notes on paper.

19
FINALLY, MUSIC HAS MARCHED THROUGH THE WORLD OF
ELECTRONICS MORE CREATIVELY STILL.
  • Remember the phonograph? Then the records78s,
45s, then casettes, and A-track tapes, and
lately, music on cds, and lastly,
  • Music downloaded from the web directly onto cds.
    E-music.

20
A book that tells a story is a kind of music in
itself.
  • Words flow. Does it matter if they flow on paper
    or on a screen?

21
It doesnt matter to music whether it is on cd or
sung in choir or played by instrument.
  • It ought not to matter if a book is printed or is
    electronic or is both.

22
How does creating an ebook happen anyway?
From an author and illustrators viewpoint
  • Here is the Key It is all a matter of mouse
    training.

(ONE OF MY FIRST DRAWINGS ON MS PAINT.)
23
MOUSE-TRAINING
  • A well-trained mouse is everything in the world
    of e-writing and e-illustrations

24
HOW A WELL-TRAINED MOUSE BEHAVES
A well-trained mouse MOVES AS YOU MOVE
IT GENTLY, SLOWLY, VERY, VERY CAREFULLY.
.
25
  • This one is the sort I use
  • A stylus that works like a mouse.

26
Where did I start? I used the Paintbrush
program that comes with Windows.
  • EVERY WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM HAS SOME FORM OF
    PAINTING PROGRAM.

27
Paintbrush program in Windows has the
basicsuse it !!!
In this toolbox are all the tools you need to
draw, paint and write stories.
You simply pick your colors from the paintboxes
below the toolbox.
. .
28
LOOK AT THE TOOLBOX
  • Left click on each box.
  • See what it does by moving your mouse around
  • If you cannot figure it out, go to the next box
  • EXPLORE!!!!

29
Now look at the colors
  • Click on each color.
  • Then, click on the bucket.
  • Then, take the bucket to the screen and click
  • Dont worryyou can erase it all by one click on
    edit and undo.

30
The above drawings were done by 3 to 6 year old
children as they stopped by this computer to
draw.
31
NOTE USE BASIC FORMS in order to draw
  • A V are good shapes for bodies.
  • O is an excellent head, of course.

32
Here are some ideas of shapes
Use the letters of the good old alphabet !!!
33
Faces need feelings.
  • Use the letters of the alphabet as shapes within
    faces to show feelings.
  • C , S , W, V , L , O, T can be used
  • To show feelings on faces.

34
Easy as a-b-c w, u, oTSVLM

36
Drawbecause everyone can !!!
37
Think, like this
38
You can also write in paintbrush program.
Look for the letter A in the toolbox. Click on
it. A menu will appear on the top of your
screen, telling you of font sizes and types.
39
Write Page number here
USE A POWER POINT LAYOUT, SUCH AS BELOW
Write title here if you want to
  • Click to add text

INSERT Text on this side
  • Picture on this side

INSERT Picture on this side
40
ORYou can use WORD format to create an ebook.
  • Word has an insert choice on its menu just like
    powerpoint does.
  • However, it takes up more memory than powerpoint.

41
The trick of
getting kids to write a good story...
writing a great story...
42
Is
To tell a great story!
43
The core of a librarian is a good storyteller!
  • Yes, know the books that tell the stories, but be
able to tell stories on your own.

44
And that is the heart of it all !
  • Nothing motivates like a good story !
  • Nothing models better than a good story!

45
All stories have 3 parts.1introduce
characters.2characters have problem.
3characters solve their problem.
46
NO PAPER, NO PEN, NO PAINT, AMEN
  • Think of this as a different way of storywriting,
    none the less, creatively.

48
PUPPETS !!!
  • The very best way to begin storytelling with
    children is USE PUPPETS!!!
  • There are all kinds of puppets, most of which are
    either healthy or free.
  • HEALTHY PUPPETS
  • THESE ARE FOOD PUPPETS--
  • YOU CAN MAKE THEM OUT OF CELERY OR
  • APPLES OR BANANAS OR CARROTS.

49
Peanut butter! The great adhesive!
50
NOW FOR THE FREE PUPPETS!
51
LET THE PUPPETS DO THE TALKING !!!
  • You are the first story teller and must become
    the model storyteller.
  • Bring in elderly people who are willing to tell
I remember when I was young stories.
  • Read very, very simple stories, like GO DOG GO to
the children so that they can see the parts of a
    story.

52
How about building a PUPPET THEATER ????
53
BEHOLD THE SIMPLICITY OF IT!!
54
If you really want to build
55
What follows are the works of children who
created their own ebooks.

HOW DO YOU SAVE THIS?
  • Print it? Only if you have a color printer and
even then, you cant make it be its best, yet.
Besides, it will be costly and eat up ink.
  • A better way is to save the work on a diskette.
This is the very first start of the ebookthen,
put the childs name on the diskette, and add to
it as he or she does more creating.

72
  • How to save what you OR the children have done is
very, very important. Many teachers and parents
have developed bad hair days because of failure
    to do this correctly..
  • 2. To save on a disk is better than saving on
your hard drivethat small little A drive disk
name floppy (which it isnt anymore) is the
first choice. Insert floppy A into the drive
until you hear the click. Go to file. Scroll
down to save as. Give your disk a name or it
will be called untitled. Get to that drop down
menu and look for jpg or jpg interchange file.
DONT SAVE ON BMP!!! BMP eats storage space like
    a hungry child!

  • Mrs. Brainbaker was outside at recess duty one
day. Edson came over and said, Look, teacher,
look! Look at all the big birds around!
  • Mrs. Brainbaker saw the seagulls flying down to
each the scraps of food the children had smuggled
out from lunch onto the playground.
  • Those are seagulls, Edson, she said.
  • Seagulls? Seagulls! That sounds like Mr. Mc
    corkgull! yelled Edson, all excited.

79
Any questions???
  • Then go for it! Keep an open mind, and
    practice drawing a bit.
